Chapter 3 - The Birth Certificate Lie

The photograph slid across the mahogany wood, coming to a halt directly beneath a silver-plated water pitcher. Graham looked down, his breath hitching in his throat. The man in the picture was not a stranger; he was Julian Vance, Graham’s estranged younger brother who had supposedly moved to Europe three years ago after a bitter family fallout over the family estate. Julian’s face stared back up from the glossy paper, wearing a tired, defeated smile that bore an uncanny, terrifying resemblance to the curve of little Chloe’s chin.

"Julian," Graham whispered, the name tasting like ash in his mouth. He looked back up at Clara, whose shoulders shook with silent, desperate weeping. "You were with Julian? You told me you met at the art gallery in Chicago. You swore to me you had no prior connection to my family."

Clara raised her head, her mascara running in dark streaks down her pale cheeks. "I had to lie, Graham. If you had known the truth—if you had known Chloe was Julian's daughter—you never would have looked at me twice. Your family hates Julian. You haven't spoken to him in five years. But when Julian disappeared last week, leaving Chloe on my doorstep with a backpack and a note, I didn't know who else to turn to."

Detective Miller stepped closer, his boots clicking rhythmically against the floor. "Mr. Vance, your brother didn't just move to Europe. Last Tuesday, his apartment in downtown Chicago was completely gutted by an arson fire. The local authorities found signs of a violent struggle, but no body. However, they did find financial records showing large, regular wire transfers originating from a corporate account bearing your exact signature."

Graham felt the blood drain entirely from his face, leaving him dizzy and lightheaded. "My signature? That's impossible. I haven't given Julian a dime since our father's will was read."

"Someone has been using your credentials, Mr. Vance," Miller said, tapping the manila folder. "And according to the bank logs, the most recent transfer of fifty thousand dollars was authorized from a terminal inside this very hotel—using Mrs. Vance's personal security passcode."

Clara shook her head frantically, stepping away from the table. "I didn't authorize it! I tried to stop him! Julian was being hunted, Graham. That's why I married you—not for your money, but for the protection your last name provides. I thought if I became a Vance, whoever is after Julian would think twice before coming after us."

Graham held Chloe tighter, the toddler finally drifting off to a restless sleep against his shoulder, her sticky fingers still gripping the crushed cupcake. The sheer weight of the deception crashed down on him, suffocating and absolute.

"If Julian is missing," Graham said, his voice trembling with a mixture of rage and terror, "where is he right now?"

Detective Miller looked toward the heavy service doors behind him as they slowly began to open again. "That's the problem, Mr. Vance. We just recovered a body from the hotel’s underground water cistern, and the victim is wearing your brother's wedding ring."
