Chapter 9

The laptop screen flickered in the dim light of the hidden alcove, casting a harsh blue glow across Julian’s face. Arthur watched anxiously, sensing the sudden shift in the accountant's demeanor. "Julian? What is that drive? What did she have on you?"
Julian didn't answer immediately. He clicked on a file named Investigation_Report_Vance.pdf and opened a series of scanned newspaper clippings and confidential internal affairs files from nearly a decade ago.
"She didn't just investigate me," Julian finally spoke, his voice dangerously calm, though his jaw was clenched so tight a muscle twitched visibly in his cheek. "She engineered my father's downfall."
Arthur stepped closer, peering at the screen. "Your father? I thought your family was from Chicago."
"We were," Julian said, scrolling down to reveal financial audit logs and fraudulent bank transfers bearing forged signatures that looked uncannily like the ones Genevieve used on the Sterling accounts. "My father was the chief financial officer for a major municipal infrastructure project back in 2014. He uncovered a massive embezzlement scheme orchestrated by a consortium of real estate developers. Before he could take his report to the federal prosecutors, he was arrested for the exact crimes he was trying to expose."
Arthur stared at the screen in horror. "Genevieve was involved in that?"
"She was the architect," Julian said, his eyes hard as flint. "The developers were her silent partners. They used shell companies identical to the ones she set up for the Sterling Foundation. When my father threatened to expose their network, they framed him. He spent three years in federal prison before his name was cleared posthumously. He died of a stress-induced heart attack six months after his release."
Julian closed the laptop lid with a sharp snap that echoed in the small alcove. The pieces of the puzzle clicked violently into place. Julian had not merely been hired by a random corporate headhunter to audit the Sterling estate; he had traced a digital breadcrumb that led directly back to the woman who had destroyed his family a decade ago. The gala, the planted necklace, the public takedown—it was all cosmic justice delivered with cold, calculated precision.
Arthur sank slowly onto a velvet stool near the wall, burying his face in his hands. "I lived with her for fifteen years, Julian. I shared a bed with a monster, and I was too cowardly to look beneath the surface."

"You didn't know, Arthur," Julian said, his tone softening slightly as he looked at the older man. "That's how people like Genevieve survive. They isolate their victims, blind their partners, and control every variable. But empires built on ruin always collapse from the inside out. And now, we have everything we need to ensure she never sees the outside of a prison cell again."
