Chapter 5

With Genevieve behind bars awaiting arraignment, the arduous task of auditing the Sterling Foundation began in earnest. Julian Vance set up a temporary command center in the estate’s grand dining room, covering the long mahogany table with spreadsheets, bank statements, and digital storage drives. Arthur Sterling sat across from him, acting as an active participant rather than a passive observer, determined to right the wrongs he had ignored for so long.
"Here," Julian said, tapping a red-inked line on a 2022 ledger. "Look at this property acquisition in upstate New York. Genevieve purchased a derelict warehouse using foundation funds, then immediately resold it to a shell company for ten times its value. That shell company is registered under a PO Box in the Cayman Islands."
Arthur leaned in, adjusting his glasses to read the microscopic serial numbers. A heavy sigh escaped his lips. "She told me it was a strategic investment for the community outreach program. I never bothered to check the registry. I trusted her blindly."
"That was her superpower," Julian remarked quietly, his eyes scanning another document. "She weaponized your trust and the social cachet of this family. Everyone assumed that because a Sterling’s name was attached to it, the enterprise must be noble. But underneath the velvet and the diamonds, it was a hollow shell built on embezzlement and intimidation."
As they worked, the heavy double doors opened, and Emily entered carrying a fresh tray of coffee and documents. Her posture was entirely different from the night of the gala; she walked with quiet confidence, her head held high. She placed the tray gently on the edge of the table, organizing the new files by date and category before either man had to ask.
"Thank you, Emily," Arthur said, offering a small, appreciative smile. "You know, at this rate, Julian and I are going to be out of a job by the end of the week. You’re running this audit better than most professional forensic accountants."
Emily smiled faintly, pouring two cups of coffee. "I pay attention to details, Mr. Sterling. It’s a survival skill in this house."

Julian looked up from his screen, catching Emily’s eye. There was a silent acknowledgment passing between them—a shared understanding of the resilience required to survive the toxic environment Genevieve had cultivated. "Well, your attention to detail is going to save this foundation," Julian said sincerely. "And more importantly, it’s going to ensure that the people who actually need these charitable funds finally receive them."
