Chapter 12

Outside the estate, the quiet night was suddenly shattered by the wailing sirens of multiple patrol cars tearing up the circular driveway with their red-and-blue lights flashing violently against the stone columns of the portico. The three intruders inside the study froze, abandoning their frantic search of the archival alcove.

"Cops!" one of them hissed, panicking. "We're compromised. Move, move!"

They scrambled toward the shattered front entrance, abandoning their tools and documents as they tried to flee through the rear gardens. But Julian Vance had anticipated every possible escape route. As the intruders burst through the rear French doors into the courtyard, the sharp glare of high-intensity tactical flashlights blinded them instantly.

"State police! Stay where you are! Hands on your heads!"

Uniformed officers swarmed the courtyard from all sides, their weapons drawn and ready. The three faux agents didn't even attempt to resist; they dropped to their knees on the wet grass, their hands locked behind their heads as officers moved in to zip-tie their wrists.

Inside the house, Julian sprinted through the splintered double doors, his eyes scanning the chaotic foyer. "Emily!" he shouted, his voice echoing through the vaulted hall. "Emily, it's Julian! You're safe!"

The hidden tapestry in the study rustled, and Emily stepped out into the room, pale and shaking, but entirely unharmed. Julian crossed the room in two rapid strides, closing the distance between them. Without a word of formal greeting, he pulled her into a firm, reassuring embrace. Emily buried her face in the lapel of his suit jacket, finally allowing the built-up terror to release in a wave of quiet, restrained sobs.

"I told you I wouldn't let anything happen to you," Julian whispered softly into her hair, his hand resting reassuringly on her shoulder.

Arthur entered the room moments later, looking breathless and shaken as he took in the ruined doorway and the flashing lights outside. "My God, Emily, are you alright?" he asked, rushing over to check on her.

"I'm fine, Mr. Sterling," Emily said, pulling back from Julian with a grateful, trembling smile. She wiped the remaining tears from her cheeks and stood up straight. "They were looking for the safe. They wanted the drives and the extortion files."

Julian walked over to the open safe, pulling his encrypted portable hard drive securely from its inner compartment and sliding it into his breast pocket. "Well, they're too late," Julian said grimly, looking out the broken window at the detained men being led away toward the squad cars. "The entire archive is secured, encrypted, and backed up in three separate federal jurisdictions. Genevieve’s network of extortion is completely dismantled."
