Chapter 13

The trial of Genevieve Sterling began the following month in a packed downtown courtroom under relentless media scrutiny. The public gallery was overflowing with reporters, curious onlookers, and former high-society acquaintances eager to witness the final downfall of the woman who had once dictated the social calendar of the state.

Genevieve sat at the defense table, wearing a crisp charcoal pantsuit instead of her prison jumpsuit, maintaining an aura of defiant pride. Her new defense team had tried every procedural maneuver in the book to suppress the digital evidence recovered from the estate safe, but the presiding judge had systematically denied every motion, citing overwhelming probable cause and public interest.

Julian Vance took the witness stand as the prosecution's primary expert witness. He stood tall and composed, detailing with clinical precision the complex web of offshore shell companies, forged signatures, and systemic embezzlement that Genevieve had orchestrated over the past decade. He presented the financial logs, the internal audits, and the security footage that had started it all—the moment Genevieve planted the diamond necklace in Emily’s bag.

When the prosecutor finished his questioning, Genevieve’s lead attorney stood up for cross-examination. "Mr. Vance, isn't it true that you harbor a personal grudge against Mrs. Sterling’s late uncle, and that your entire investigation was motivated by a desire for personal vengeance rather than professional objectivity?"

Julian did not flinch. He looked directly at the defense attorney, then turned his gaze toward Genevieve, who stared back at him with narrowed, venomous eyes.

"My father was falsely accused and imprisoned for crimes he did not commit, crimes orchestrated by the exact same network of individuals my investigation uncovered," Julian replied clearly, his voice carrying effortlessly across the silent courtroom. "Justice is not a personal vendetta, counselor. It is the inevitable reckoning that occurs when people like your client believe they are above the law."

The courtroom erupted into a low murmur of shock at the revelation. The judge banged his gavel once to restore order. Genevieve’s face turned deathly pale. She realized in that precise moment that Julian hadn't just stumbled into her life by accident; he was the ghost of her past come to collect a long-overdue debt.

The jury deliberated for less than three hours. When the foreperson stood to read the verdict, the tension in the room was palpable. Guilty on all counts: grand larceny, corporate fraud, obstruction of justice, and extortion. Genevieve closed her eyes as the judge recited the mandatory sentences, her carefully constructed empire reduced to dust in a matter of seconds.
