Chapter 8

Back at the Sterling estate, Julian and Arthur were knee-deep in the physical restoration of the main house. With the board purged and the initial audits underway, they turned their attention to the private quarters. Arthur led Julian down a narrow, wood-paneled corridor behind the master bedroom, stopping in front of an unremarkable mahogany bookshelf.
"Genevieve always insisted this wing remain private," Arthur explained, pulling a specific volume of poetry—a first edition of Lord Byron—from the shelf. As the book shifted, a heavy click echoed through the wall, and a section of the wood-paneled wall swung open to reveal a steel-reinforced safe built directly into the masonry.
Julian stepped closer, whistling softly. "Classic old-school security. Let me guess, you don't know the combination?"
"I don't," Arthur admitted, shaking his head. "She changed it five years ago after our anniversary. I never pried. I assumed it just held jewelry and family deeds."
"It holds a lot more than that," Julian said, pulling a specialized digital scanner from his toolkit and placing it against the electronic keypad of the safe. "People like Genevieve don't hoard diamonds just to look pretty; they hoard leverage. This safe is probably a localized archive of every dirty secret she ever bought, traded, or extorted from the people who sat at our dinner table."
It took Julian nearly twenty minutes of delicate electronic manipulation, bypassing three separate fail-safes and a thermal-sensing lock, before the heavy steel door finally popped open with a satisfying hiss. Inside, neatly organized in velvet-lined leather folders, lay dozens of documents, flash drives, and handwritten journals.
Arthur reached out slowly, picking up the top folder. He opened it, and his face drained of color. "My God," he whispered, staring at a series of compromising photographs and financial extortion receipts involving a sitting state senator. "She was running a private intelligence ring out of our own home."

Julian pulled out a digital drive labeled simply Vance – 2018. He froze, his professional detachment momentarily cracking. He stared at the label, a cold spike of adrenaline shooting through his chest. He plugged the drive into his portable laptop, his fingers hovering over the trackpad as the directory loaded on the screen.
