Chapter 6

Three weeks after Genevieve's arrest, the Sterling Foundation held its first emergency board meeting under the joint interim leadership of Arthur Sterling and Julian Vance. The mahogany boardroom downtown smelled of old leather and expensive polish, but the atmosphere was tense, laden with the anxiety of long-standing board members who feared their own complicity might be exposed.
Arthur sat at the head of the long table, flanked by Julian on his right and Emily—attending as an official stakeholder representative—on his left. The contrast between the old guard and the new direction was stark. The remaining board members, accustomed to rubber-stamping Genevieve’s lavish proposals without question, shifted uncomfortably in their high-backed leather chairs.
"Let’s dispense with the pleasantries," Julian began, standing up to address the room with a remote control in his hand. He clicked a button, and the wall-mounted projector illuminated a stark financial breakdown onto the screen. "For the past five years, forty percent of the foundation's operating budget has been siphoned into unauthorized personal accounts controlled directly by Genevieve Sterling."
A collective gasp echoed around the room. One of the senior board members, a pompous man named Charles Pendleton who had served alongside Arthur for decades, slammed his palm onto the table.
"This is an outrage!" Pendleton bellowed, his face turning crimson. "Are you implying that this board sat idly by while criminal acts were committed? We trusted Mrs. Sterling implicitly. We had no reason to suspect—"
"That is precisely the problem, Mr. Pendleton," Julian interrupted, his voice cutting through the noise with absolute authority. He clicked the remote again, displaying a series of signed approval forms bearing Pendleton’s signature alongside Genevieve’s. "You had every reason to suspect if you had bothered to review the quarterly expenditure reports. Your signature is right here, authorizing the transfer of funds to the very same shell companies."
Pendleton sputtered, his bravado evaporating instantly as he stared at the projected evidence. He looked desperately around the table, but the other board members avoided his gaze, suddenly fascinated by the grain of the mahogany wood.
Arthur looked across the table at Pendleton, his expression hardening into a mask of cold disappointment. "You sign your name, Charles, but you never read the pages. That negligence ends today. Either you and the rest of the complicit board members resign before the close of business, or I hand these complete files directly to the state attorney general's office for immediate indictment."

The silence in the boardroom was absolute. Pendleton swallowed hard, his hands trembling slightly as he reached for his leather briefcase. Without another word, he stood up and walked out of the room, followed quickly by two other frightened board members. The housecleaning of the Sterling empire had truly begun, and there was no turning back.
