Chapter 7

In the fluorescent-lit sterility of the county detention center, Genevieve Sterling sat across the stainless-steel table from her court-appointed defense attorney, a weary public defender who was already advising her to take a plea deal. Genevieve, dressed in a standard orange jumpsuit that clashed violently with her aristocratic demeanor, refused to listen.
"A plea deal is an admission of defeat, Marcus," Genevieve said, her voice a low, venomous hiss. "I did nothing that every other wealthy family in this state hasn't been doing for generations. I was just careless with the paper trail."
Marcus sighed, rubbing his temples. "Mrs. Sterling, your husband handed the prosecution a mountain of forensic evidence, and Julian Vance has systematically dismantled every offshore account you set up. The jury will see the security footage of you planting the necklace. You aren't fighting a legal battle; you're delaying an inevitable twenty-year sentence."
Genevieve leaned forward, the steel chair scraping loudly against the linoleum floor. Her dark eyes burned with a manic intensity. "Find a weakness, Marcus. Find something on Julian Vance. Everyone has a skeleton in their closet. Dig into his past, his finances, his family. Find out why an independent forensic accountant suddenly cares so much about a maid from a broken home."
Marcus shook his head slowly. "Julian Vance’s background has already been vetted by the prosecution. He’s clean. Former federal investigator, top of his class, spotless record. You’re looking for a ghost that doesn't exist, Genevieve. You need to start thinking about cooperation if you want to see daylight before you're seventy."

As Marcus gathered his paperwork and signaled the guard to end the meeting, Genevieve sat back in her chair. A cold, calculating smile crept back onto her lips, masking the rising panic beneath. She knew something Marcus didn't. She knew about the hidden safe in the estate’s master study—a safe that contained more than just financial records. It held personal leverage over half the political elite in the state, secrets she had meticulously gathered over a decade of hosting high-society dinners. If she could somehow get word out to her remaining loyalists on the outside, she could still orchestrate a lifeline. But as the heavy metal door slammed shut, locking her away from the world she once ruled, she realized her empire of shadows was finally collapsing around her.
