Chapter 3

The party dissolved with the chaotic grace of a sinking ship. Wealthy acquaintances who had toasted Genevieve minutes earlier now hurried toward the grand mahogany doors, eager to distance themselves from the unfolding scandal. Within ten minutes, the cavernous hallway echoed only with the muted footsteps of departing staff and the low murmur of Julian speaking quietly on his mobile phone to the lead investigator.

Genevieve stood near the base of the staircase, entirely isolated. Her husband, Arthur, a quiet and perpetually overlooked man who spent most of his time in the estate’s private library, finally emerged from the shadows. Arthur adjusted his spectacles, looking at his wife not with anger, but with a profound, weary disappointment. He held a thick manila folder in his left hand—financial records he had secretly compiled after noticing discrepancies in the estate's tax filings.

"It’s over, Genevieve," Arthur said softly, his voice lacking any theatricality. "I tried to warn you months ago, but you were too arrogant to listen. You thought because you controlled the social narrative, you controlled the law."

Genevieve turned to face him, her eyes flashing with a sudden, bitter fury. "You pathetic coward," she hissed, taking a step toward him. "If I go down, I take this entire family name with me. Every foundation, every trust fund, every charity gala we ever hosted—it all traces back to shady land deals and ghost companies that you signed your name to as well, Arthur."

Arthur didn’t flinch. He simply opened the manila folder and let a single document flutter down onto the marble floor. "My signature was forged, Genevieve. And I have the forensic handwriting analysis right here to prove it. I filed my cooperation paperwork with the district attorney's office this morning."

The betrayal hit Genevieve harder than Julian’s digital evidence. For the first time, her hands trembled visibly. She looked from her husband to Julian, who had finished his call and was walking back toward them with a pair of local police officers in tow. The heavy oak doors swung open, letting in the cool night air and the flashing red-and-blue lights of squad cars parked along the circular driveway.

Emily stood near the library door, watching the woman who had tried to destroy her life finally face the consequences of her ambition. There was no joy in the maid's eyes, only a quiet, healing closure. Julian walked past Genevieve, nodding respectfully to the arriving officers, who immediately moved to flank the mistress of the house. The golden handcuffs gleamed under the crystal chandelier, a stark reminder that no amount of velvet could hide the rot underneath.
