Chapter 2

The silence that followed the security footage playback was heavier than the crystal chandelier suspended above the foyer. Guests shifted uneasily, casting sideways glances at Genevieve Sterling, whose composure had not entirely shattered, though a thin film of sweat now coated her temples. She adjusted the high collar of her black velvet dress, her dark eyes narrowing into dangerous slits. She realized instantly that Julian Vance had not merely stumbled upon her scheme; he had been hunting her for months.
Julian ignored the murmurs rippling through the crowd. He kept his firm grip on Emily’s arm, guiding the sobbing young woman away from the center of the hall toward a set of velvet armchairs near the library entrance. Emily’s breathing remained shallow, her chest heaving as the shock of the near-ruin subsided into a profound, trembling exhaustion. Julian handed her a glass of water from a passing silver tray, his demeanor gentle yet utterly resolute.
"You're safe here, Emily," Julian murmured quietly, ensuring his words were meant only for her. "No one is sending you anywhere."
Across the room, Genevieve descended the staircase with measured, deliberate steps. She refused to run. Running was an admission of defeat, and Genevieve Sterling never admitted defeat. She stopped two steps from the bottom, looking down at Julian with a mask of icy indifference. "A clever trick, Mr. Vance," she said, her voice smooth and devoid of panic. "Manipulating digital feeds is a federal offense. I trust you have the proper chain of custody for that file, or this little theatrical display will cost you your license."
Julian turned to face her directly, leaving Emily safely seated. He took two steps closer, closing the distance between them until he could smell the expensive jasmine perfume she wore—a scent that now reeked of deception. "The files are secured off-site, Genevieve. Along with the wire transfer logs from your offshore accounts, the forged medical signatures on your late uncle’s will, and the inventory records of the estate items you’ve been quietly hocking for the past three years."
Genevieve’s eyes twitched. A micro-expression of pure panic flashed across her features before she managed to rein it back in. "You are bluffing," she whispered.

"Am I?" Julian replied, pulling a sleek tablet from his breast pocket. He tapped the screen once, illuminating his face in the blue glow. "The local precinct has already received the automated package. By the time the clock strikes midnight, the state police will be walking through those front doors with a warrant for grand larceny, corporate fraud, and obstruction of justice. Your little performance tonight was just the nail in your own coffin."
