Chapter 10

While Julian and Arthur unraveled the dark history within the hidden safe, events outside the estate were moving with dangerous velocity. Marcus, Genevieve’s defense attorney, realized he was fighting a losing battle, but he was merely a puppet in a larger game. The real power brokers—the politicians and real estate tycoons whose secrets were locked away in Genevieve’s physical and digital archives—were panicking. If the contents of that safe fell entirely into the hands of federal prosecutors, dozens of powerful men would fall alongside her.

A sleek black sedan pulled up quietly to the gated entrance of the Sterling estate late that evening. A man in an expensive tailored suit stepped out, flashing a fraudulent federal marshal badge at the security guard stationed at the gatehouse. The guard, bewildered and exhausted from the weeks of chaos, buzzed the vehicle through without checking the registry database.

Inside the mansion, Emily was working late in the ground-floor study, organizing the remaining foundation receipts. She noticed the security monitor flicker as the black sedan pulled up to the front portico. Frowning, she stood up and walked toward the grand foyer, her instincts telling her something was amiss. The estate was supposed to be locked down, with local police patrolling the perimeter.

The front doorbell rang—a sharp, demanding chime that echoed through the empty hallway. Emily hesitated for a moment, then walked to the heavy oak doors, peering through the brass peephole. A stranger stood outside, wearing a dark federal-style suit, holding a leather folder under his arm.

"State Attorney General’s Special Task Force," the man spoke loudly through the intercom, his voice smooth and authoritative. "I need immediate access to the master study to secure classified evidence regarding the ongoing Genevieve Sterling case."

Emily’s heart raced. She remembered Julian’s strict instructions: No one enters the estate after dark without direct confirmation from me or Arthur.

"I'm sorry," Emily replied through the intercom, keeping her voice steady despite her rising anxiety. "Mr. Vance and Mr. Sterling are currently off-site. You'll have to return in the morning with proper judicial representation."

On the other side of the heavy door, the faux agent’s polite facade vanished instantly. He pressed a gloved hand against the wood, signaling two other men lurking in the shadows of the porch. "Open the door voluntarily, young lady," the man hissed through the intercom, dropping the professional charade, "or we kick it down and take what we came for."
