Chapter 9 - The Counter-Strike

The interrogation room at the downtown federal precinct smelled of old coffee and bleach. The overhead fluorescent tube flickered intermittently, casting a jaundiced tint over the gray metal table where Elena Vance sat upright, her burgundy blazer still immaculate despite hours in custody. Her hands, resting uncupped on the laminate surface, were bare of the steel cuffs; her attorneys had already secured an emergency injunction pending jurisdiction review.

The heavy steel door pushed open, and Marcus walked in, his face drawn and exhausted. He tossed the leather-bound journal onto the metal table, the thud echoing sharply in the small room.

"It’s over, Mother," Marcus said, pulling out the opposite chair and sitting down without being invited. "I found the journal in the estate vault. Father wrote down everything. The embezzlement, the clinic audits, and what happened to Dr. Evans."

Elena didn't look down at the journal. A cold, sardonic smile touched the corners of her lips. "Your father was a weak, sentimental alcoholic who couldn't stomach the realities of maintaining an empire. He wrote fantasies in those journals to soothe his guilty conscience while he spent the dividends I earned."

"He named dates, bank routing numbers, and corporate subsidiaries," Marcus shot back, leaning across the table. "The federal prosecutor has the entire trail. You can't talk your way out of this with corporate injunctions and hired judges."

Elena slowly raised her dark eyes, fixing her son with a gaze so chilling it made him momentarily recoil. "You think the federal government wants a public scandal that brings down three Fortune 500 corporations, two major hospital networks, and half the state's congressional campaign donors? Do you honestly believe a judge is going to sign off on a televised trial that bankrupts the local economy?"

Marcus opened his mouth to reply, but the heavy door swung open again. Investigator Harris stepped inside, holding a crisp white tablet displaying a breaking news alert.

"Mr. Vance, Mrs. Vance," Harris said, his voice flat and devoid of professional warmth. "The magistrate just granted the federal injunction. But not the one you expected."

Elena smirked, leaning back in her chair. "I told you. The system protects its own."

"Not this time," Harris corrected, turning the tablet screen toward them so they could read the headline. "The Attorney General’s office just unsealed a sweeping federal grand jury indictment. Not just against Elena Vance, but against the entire Vance Foundation board of directors for systemic infant trafficking, corporate racketeering, and obstruction of justice."

Elena’s smirk vanished instantly, replaced by a mask of frozen disbelief.
