Chapter 6 - The State Steps In

"Special Agent Vance? No, Detective Vance," the man corrected himself with a sharp nod toward Marcus before turning his cool, professional gaze onto Elena. "Mrs. Elena Vance, I am Investigator Harris with the State Child Protection and Grand Jury Special Task Force. I'm afraid the statute of limitations on corporate fraud and infant trafficking involving falsified federal health grants does not expire."
Elena’s knees buckled slightly, though she caught herself against the edge of the metal bedside table, her fingers brushing against the remnants of the silver wax seal. "This is an administrative error. I demand to see a warrant."
Investigator Harris pulled a folded parchment from his portfolio and extended it smoothly. "Signed by Judge Callahan ten minutes ago. We have concurrent jurisdiction over the Vance Foundation’s medical archives, and we have frozen all primary asset accounts pending a full forensic audit."
Marcus let out a slow, ragged breath, running a hand through his hair. He didn't look triumphant; he looked hollowed out, as if the foundation of his entire existence had just been excavated and found to be built on quicksand.
"Mother," Marcus said, his voice pleading one last time. "Tell them where the other records are. The encrypted server in the basement of the estate. If you cooperate now, maybe the judge will consider mitigating circumstances."
"Cooperate?" Elena hissed, her eyes darting between her son and the federal investigator like a trapped animal. "I built this family out of the ashes of war and poverty while my husband drank himself to death! I protected every single one of you from ruin, and this is how you repay me? By bringing a stranger into a hospital room to tear down my legacy?"
"She is not a stranger, Mother," Marcus said firmly. "She is my cousin. Or rather, our family's rightful bloodline, buried beneath thirty years of manufactured lies."
Chloe looked down at the baby, who had finally fallen fast asleep despite the shouting matches and federal warrants filling the room. The tiny chest rose and fell in a steady, peaceful rhythm, completely unaware of the generational war raging around its crib.
"I don't care about your money, Detective Harris," Chloe said, her voice cutting cleanly through the tension. "I don't care about the foundation, the stocks, or the estates. All I wanted was to know the truth about why my family was destroyed. And now that I have it, I want these people out of my room."

Investigator Harris nodded respectfully. "Understood, Ms. Davis. We have officers stationed outside the door. Mrs. Vance, you are coming with me downtown for questioning regarding federal health fraud and obstruction of justice."
