Chapter 5 - The Mirror of Betrayal

The sterile hum of the hospital ventilation system seemed to amplify, filling the sudden vacuum left by Marcus's words. Chloe froze, her fingers clutching the edge of the patterned blanket until her knuckles throbbed.
"What did you just say?" Chloe demanded, her voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register that mirrored Elena’s earlier demeanor. "Read that again."
Marcus didn't flinch. He carefully opened the second manila folder, sliding out a certified hospital ledger from thirty years prior, yellowed at the edges and stamped with the ink of a defunct county health board. He pointed a steady finger down the line of handwritten entries.
"It wasn't a simple swap to cover up a mistake," Marcus explained, his voice heavy with grief. "My mother didn't just take a child to secure an heir when the doctors told her she couldn't conceive naturally again. She orchestrated a dual displacement. Your mother, Chloe, wasn't just a random victim. She was a nurse who threatened to blow the whistle on the illegal adoption ring operating inside this very hospital."
Elena spun around, her face twisted in pure venom. "Shut your mouth, Marcus! You are speaking about things you do not understand. I did what was necessary for the survival of this family!"
"You ruined innocent lives!" Chloe shouted, finally breaking her composure as hot tears spilled over her lashes. She clutched the newborn tighter, pressing the baby’s tiny heartbeat against her own chest. "You stole my mother's future, you forced her into a life of poverty and heartbreak, and now you walk in here demanding to look at my child as if you have a shred of human decency left in your bones?"
Nurse Miller stepped forward, placing a comforting hand on Chloe's shoulder. "Easy, honey. Keep your breathing steady. Don't let her stress you."
Elena drew herself up, attempting to reclaim her shattered dignity. She smoothed the front of her burgundy blazer with jerky, uncoordinated movements. "You can scream all you want, girl. Emotions don't hold up in a court of law. Even if my foolish son managed to dig up some old financial records, statute of limitations expired decades ago. You cannot touch the estate, you cannot touch the foundation, and you certainly cannot prove that this infant belongs to anyone other than the registered mother on file."
"The registry doesn't matter," a crisp new voice echoed from the doorway.

Everyone turned their heads toward the entrance once more. A tall man in a tailored grey suit stepped into the room, holding a leather portfolio embossed with the seal of the State Attorney General’s Office.
