Chapter 1 - The First Slice

"Mason, what did you do?" Clara shouted, her voice cutting through the suffocating tension of the Grand Ballroom like a jagged blade. She stepped forward, her hand flying out to ward off the woman in the beige shirt, her long red hair swaying with the violence of her movement. "Are you out of your mind, Eleanor? That cake took days to prepare, and it was meant for a child!"

"I did what needed to be done, Clara, and you know it," Eleanor replied, her voice dangerously low, maintaining her rigid posture in her light beige button-down shirt and black pants. She stared down at the large grey trash can where the multi-tiered chocolate cake lay ruined, its delicate frosting smeared against the plastic rim. "That cake was never meant to be eaten. It was a Trojan horse, and you invited the enemy right through the front doors."

"No, please! That was mine!" six-year-old Toby wailed, his small body shaking uncontrollably as he clutched the lapels of his tiny navy blue suit jacket. Tears streamed down his flushed cheeks, soaking his white shirt and tangling his short blonde hair. "My birthday... why did you ruin my birthday?"

"Quiet, boy," a booming, authoritative voice echoed from the marbled entryway. Arthur Vance, fifty-five years old with sharp grey hair and a dark jacket over a black shirt, strode through the double doors flanked by two private security guards. His stern eyes swept across the devastation of the dessert table before fixing on Eleanor. "What happened here?"

The ballroom fell into a terrified hush. The assembled guests, draped in designer evening wear, stepped backward into the shadows, unwilling to be caught in the crossfire of the Vance family feud. Arthur’s gaze hardened as he took in the weeping child, the ruined confection, and the defiant stance of the woman who had just committed the act.

"Explain yourself, Eleanor," Arthur demanded, stepping closer, his presence commanding absolute obedience. "You have five seconds before I have security remove you from this estate permanently."

Eleanor didn’t flinch. She met Arthur’s piercing stare with an icy calm that belied the chaos surrounding them. "Ask your precious granddaughter Clara what was baked inside the third tier, Arthur. Ask her why she insisted on a custom pastry chef with no verifiable background."

Clara’s face drained of color, her breath hitching in her throat as she took a panicked step backward. "She’s lying! Eleanor is unhinged! She’s always hated this family's success!"

"Not anymore. I know what you did," Arthur said firmly, his voice dropping an octave as he turned his gaze slowly from Eleanor to his pale, trembling granddaughter. He reached inside his dark jacket, his hand lingering over something hidden in his inner pocket. "And security isn't throwing her out, Clara. They’re locking the doors from the outside."
