Chapter 4 - The Confession Tape

Upstairs in the private study, the air was thick with the scent of burning cedarwood and expensive scotch. Arthur Vance sat behind his massive mahogany desk, his face illuminated only by the amber glow of a desk lamp and the harsh light of a laptop screen playing security footage from the kitchen loading dock.

The video showed Clara standing by the rear service entrance three hours before the party started. She was handing a heavy, unmarked envelope to a towering man in a courier uniform—a man whose face was clearly visible despite the baseball cap pulled low over his brow. That man was Viktor Vance, Arthur’s youngest son and Clara’s favorite uncle, currently living in self-imposed exile in Zurich.

Arthur’s hands trembled as he watched Viktor hand Clara the sealed container of potassium cyanide before walking away toward a waiting black sedan. The betrayal hit Arthur not like a wave, but like a physical blow to the chest, knocking the wind out of him. Viktor was his flesh and blood. A disappointment, yes, but a murderer? No—that was a line Arthur never believed any of his children would cross.

The heavy oak door to the study swung open, and Eleanor walked in, closing it securely behind her. She approached the desk, standing quietly as she waited for Arthur to process what he was seeing.

"He called me yesterday," Arthur said, his voice cracking slightly, lacking the commanding authority it had held in the ballroom. He didn't look up from the screen. "Viktor called me from Zurich. He said he wanted to reconcile. He said he missed the family, missed his nephew Toby."

"It wasn't a reconciliation call, Arthur. It was an alibi check," Eleanor said gently, resting her hands on the edge of the desk. "He knew that if he was out of the country when the poisoning occurred, the authorities couldn't extradite him without concrete proof of direct financial coordination. That's why Clara was the one holding the smoking gun."

Arthur slammed his fist down on the mahogany desk, making the crystal decanter rattle violently. "Why? After everything I've built, everything I've given them, why would they try to kill their own blood? Why Toby?"

"Because of the amended will you filed last month," Eleanor answered without hesitation. "When you designated little Toby as the primary beneficiary of the Vance Holdings trust, bypassing the adult heirs until he turns twenty-five, you essentially cut Viktor and Clara out of the immediate liquidity pool. They needed the boy out of the picture to force a reversion of the estate back to the primary lineage."

Arthur stared at Eleanor, his eyes wide with a sudden, horrifying realization. "You knew about the will amendment before anyone else did."

"I drafted it, Arthur. At your direct request," Eleanor reminded him calmly. "Which is why I had surveillance on the kitchen from the moment the catering truck arrived. I knew they would try something. I just didn't expect them to be reckless enough to use a public event."

Arthur leaned back in his leather chair, rubbing his temples as a profound weariness settled over his fifty-five-year-old frame. "What do we do now, Eleanor? We can't go to the police. If the SEC and the FBI get a hold of these financial records, the entire Vance empire collapses overnight. Every investor will pull out, and thousands of innocent employees will lose their jobs."

"We don't go to the police yet," Eleanor said, leaning forward, her gaze intensifying. "We use Viktor’s greed against him. We let him think the plan succeeded."

Arthur looked up, a dark, dangerous spark igniting in his grey eyes. "Explain."
