Chapter 3 - The Basement Vault

The basement of the Vance estate was a relic of an older, darker era of the family's history—a sprawling subterranean labyrinth of reinforced concrete, vintage wine racks, and obsolete panic rooms converted into holding cells. The air down here was cold, smelling faintly of damp stone and aged oak.
Clara stumbled down the final concrete steps, her heels clicking frantically against the floor as the two guards propelled her forward without an ounce of gentleness. Her light blue midi dress was stained with dust from the walls, her long red hair falling out of its elegant styling to frame a face twisted in panic and desperate defiance.
"You can't do this to me! I am a Vance!" Clara screamed, her voice echoing off the curved brick ceilings. "Grandfather will realize this is a mistake! Eleanor is orchestrating a coup, and you blind fools are helping her steal the entire empire!"
The guards ignored her entirely, hauling her down a narrow corridor lined with iron-barred doors until they reached cell three. The heavy metal door swung open with a screech of ungreased hinges, and Clara was shoved inside, stumbling hard against the concrete floor. Before she could push herself up, the door slammed shut behind her, the lock clicking into place with a finality that made her heart seize.
"Let me out of here!" Clara wept, pounding her fists against the cold iron bars. "You're making a mistake! You'll all pay for this!"
"Save your breath, Clara. The only thing you'll be paying for from now on is your legal defense team—if you can afford one after we audit your offshore accounts," a voice echoed from the dim shadows of the corridor.
Eleanor stepped out from under the flickering overhead fluorescent light, walking slowly toward the cell. She wore the same beige button-down shirt and black pants, her dark hair still pulled back in that sleek, immaculate low bun. Her expression was not one of triumph, but of profound, bone-deep exhaustion.
Clara pressed her face against the iron bars, her eyes bloodshot and wide with hysteria. "You bitch. You planned this from the very beginning, didn't you? You planted that poison in the cake just to frame me and take my place in the corporate lineage!"
"Clara, look at me," Eleanor said softly, stopping just a few feet away from the cell door. She didn't raise her voice. She didn't need to. "Do you honestly think I would risk a child's life just to climb a corporate ladder? I’ve spent the last six months tracking the missing funds from the South American accounts. Funds that you diverted. Funds that you used to pay off debts to people who don't negotiate extensions."
Clara’s breath hitched. For a fraction of a second, the panic in her eyes gave way to something far darker—recognition, and fear. "You don't know what you're talking about."
"I know about the gambling debts, Clara. I know about the shell company registered under your maiden name. And most importantly, I know that the man who delivered that cake wasn't a baker at all," Eleanor said, stepping closer, her dark eyes pinning Clara to the spot. "He's a professional debt collector who works for the Cartel operating out of the port district."
Clara’s knees buckled, and she slid slowly down the iron bars until she was sitting on the cold concrete floor, her hands trembling uncontrollably. "They'll kill me," she whispered, the defiance entirely draining out of her. "If the police don't get me, the men I owe will."
May you like
"Maybe," Eleanor replied coldly, turning on her heel to walk back down the corridor. "If you don't tell Arthur right now who else in this family helped you finance that debt."
