Chapter 2 - Locked Doors and Whispered Lies

The heavy brass deadbolts of the Grand Ballroom slid into place with a definitive, chilling thud that reverberated through the chests of every guest trapped inside. Panic rippled through the elite crowd, soft murmurs turning into frantic whispers as the realization set in that Arthur Vance had just turned a birthday celebration into a maximum-security interrogation room.
"Arthur, have you lost your mind?" Senator Sterling, a long-time family associate, stepped forward, smoothing the lapels of his bespoke Italian suit. "We are guests here. You cannot simply detain us because of a domestic dispute over a ruined dessert!"
Arthur didn't even look at the senator. His eyes remained locked on Clara, who was now trembling visibly, her manicured fingers digging into the fabric of her light blue midi dress. The security guards flanking the entrance moved in silent unison, positioning themselves squarely in front of the ornate exit doors, their arms crossed, their expressions carved from stone.
"Sit down, Senator, unless you want your name added to the manifest of individuals whose financial assets are currently being frozen by my legal team," Arthur said, his tone devoid of any warmth. He turned his heavy gaze back to Eleanor, who stood steadfast beside the grey trash can containing the shattered remains of the chocolate cake. "Eleanor. You wrecked the centerpiece. You better have a damn good reason, or the rest of your life will be spent behind the bars of a federal penitentiary."
Eleanor took a slow, deliberate breath, adjusting the collar of her beige button-down shirt. She bent down slightly, her voice softening as she looked at little Toby, who was still hiccuping through his tears, clutching his navy blue suit jacket like a shield. "Toby, sweetie, look at me. I am so sorry I had to ruin your cake. But if you had eaten a single bite of that chocolate frosting, you wouldn't have woken up tomorrow."
"Lies! Pure, manipulative lies!" Clara shrieked, breaking her silence as she lunged forward, though she stopped short when one of Arthur’s guards rested a heavy hand on his holster. "She’s trying to sabotage my standing in the family trust! Grandfather, look at her! She’s an outsider!"
"An outsider who manages the family’s forensic accounting department, Clara," Arthur countered sharply, stepping between his granddaughter and the trash can. He reached down into the ruined cake, ignoring the smear of dark chocolate that caught on his fingers, and pulled out a small, sealed glass capsule wrapped tightly in plastic wrap. He held it up to the glittering chandelier light. "An outsider who found this before it made its way into the digestive tract of a six-year-old child."
The room collectively gasped. Senator Sterling took a hasty step backward, distancing himself from Clara as if her very presence were toxic. The glass capsule contained a crystalline white powder that shimmered ominously under the harsh lights.
"Potassium cyanide," Eleanor stated plainly, breaking the heavy silence that fell over the room. "Enough to wipe out half the people standing in this ballroom, let alone a room full of children."
Arthur turned the capsule over in his rough, weathered hands, his face darkening into a mask of pure fury. He looked at Clara, his voice trembling with a terrifying, suppressed rage. "You ordered this cake from an unlicensed bakery in the industrial district. You paid cash. And you made sure Toby was the one to make the first ceremonial cut."
Clara backed away until the back of her legs hit the edge of the mahogany dining table. Her eyes darted wildly toward the locked exit doors, searching for an escape route that no longer existed. "I... I didn't know. Someone must have planted that! Eleanor set me up!"

"Security," Arthur said quietly, raising a single finger. "Take her to the basement vault. And bring the chef who delivered the cake upstairs. Let's see how long her story holds up when we check the security cameras from the delivery dock."
