Chapter 11 - The Inheritance of Truth

Marcus stood awkwardly in the doorway, his eyes darting between Chloe, her mother Margaret, and the newborn resting peacefully between them. He felt like an intruder in a scene he had accidentally helped create, yet desperately wished to be part of.
Margaret stiffened immediately, pulling her hand back from the baby and standing up to shield Chloe with her own body. "What is he doing here?" she demanded, her voice shaking with righteous fury directed at the very name that had destroyed her life three decades ago.
"Margaret," Marcus said quietly, raising his hands in a gesture of total surrender. He didn't step any closer to the bed. "I don't expect you to forgive me, or even look at me without hatred. But I needed to bring you this."
He laid the manila envelope on the empty visitor's chair near the door.
"What is that?" Chloe asked, her eyes narrowing with defensive suspicion.
"It’s the formal deed transfer and corporate asset forfeiture release," Marcus explained, keeping his eyes fixed on the floor. "My mother tried to secure an emergency injunction this morning, but the board voted unanimously to strip her of all executive powers. I was appointed temporary trustee by the federal bankruptcy court. I’ve signed over my personal trust fund, the estate deeds, and the entire Vance philanthropic endowment into an independent restitution trust bearing your family name."
Margaret stared at him in stunned silence. "You're giving away everything? Your entire inheritance?"
"It was never mine to begin with," Marcus replied, a bitter, self-deprecating smile touching his lips. "It was built on stolen blood and corrupted records. Keeping a single dime of it would make me no better than my mother."
Chloe looked from Marcus to the envelope, then down at her baby. "And your mother? Where is she now?"
Marcus’s expression hardened. "She’s being transferred to a federal penitentiary upstate pending arraignment. Her high-priced attorneys abandoned her once the financial accounts were frozen by the SEC. She is completely alone."
Nurse Miller crossed her arms, breaking the heavy silence. "Well, karma has a funny way of balancing the books, doesn't it?"
Before Marcus could answer, his phone buzzed violently in his coat pocket. He pulled it out, glanced at the screen, and his face drained of what little color remained.
"What is it?" Chloe asked, sensing the sudden shift in the room's energy.

"That was my mother’s defense counsel," Marcus whispered, staring at the screen in absolute horror. "She didn't just hide financial records in the estate vault. She left a contingency switch with an offshore server that activates if she’s ever formally incarcerated."
