Chapter 7 - Chains of Authority

Elena stood frozen for a beat, her dark eyes flashing with a dangerous defiance that defied her seventy-odd years. She looked at Investigator Harris, then at her son, and finally down at the shattered silver wax seal resting on the tray table.
"You think a pair of silver cuffs will silence me?" Elena asked, her voice dropping into a venomous hiss. "I know secrets about every judge, senator, and prosecutor in this state. If I go down, I am taking half the judiciary with me."
"That sounds suspiciously like a threat of obstruction and witness intimidation," Investigator Harris noted calmly, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt loop with practiced ease. "Which I am adding to your charge sheet right now. Turn around and place your hands behind your back, Mrs. Vance."
Marcus stepped back, shielding his eyes with one hand as federal agents poured into the room, filling the sterile space with dark suits and grim expressions. Elena did not scream, nor did she weep. With a chilling display of aristocratic pride, she turned slowly, her burgundy blazer flaring around her knees, and extended her wrists toward the investigator. The metallic click of the handcuffs echoing off the tile walls sounded like a gavel falling in an empty courtroom.
As they led her toward the door, Elena paused for a fraction of a second, casting one final, unblinking glare at the newborn resting in Chloe’s arms.
"You think you’ve won," Elena whispered as she passed the bed. "You have no idea what my husband hid in the main vault. The war has only just begun."
The door swung shut behind the entourage, leaving a heavy, exhausted silence in their wake. Nurse Miller let out a long breath, sliding down into the visitor's chair with her hands trembling in her lap.
"Well," the nurse muttered, shaking her head. "That’s one way to clear out the visitors."
Marcus remained standing by the bed, his shoulders slumped, staring at the floor where the silver wax seal had fragmented into tiny, glittering pieces. "She’s right about one thing," he said quietly, refusing to look up. "My father's private vault at the estate. He left instructions that were only to be opened upon his death—or if his corporate records were ever seized by federal authorities."
Chloe adjusted her grip on the baby, her defensive instincts flaring up again at the mention of more secrets. "I don't care about his vault, Marcus. I want you to leave. You share her blood, and right now, looking at you is making it very difficult for me to stay calm."
May you like
Marcus nodded slowly, his eyes finally meeting hers, filled with a deep, crushing sorrow. "I understand, Chloe. But before I go, you need to know what’s inside that vault. Because it doesn't just concern my mother's crimes. It concerns your mother's real killer."
