Chapter 12 - The Contingency Trigger

The hospital room felt suddenly claustrophobic as the implications of Marcus’s words settled over them like lead weight.
"What kind of contingency switch?" Margaret demanded, stepping closer to Marcus with the fierce protectiveness of a mother who had already lost too much to let lightning strike twice.
Marcus ran both hands through his disheveled hair, his breathing turning shallow. "My father’s journal mentioned a secondary file. Not financial records, not medical cover-ups—something far worse. A portfolio of compromising surveillance, financial bribes, and leaked classified intelligence involving every federal official currently investigating her case. If the server detects her incarceration status for more than twelve hours, it automatically broadcasts the entire cache to international wire services and dark web forums."
"That would crash the national banking infrastructure and compromise active federal investigations," Nurse Miller said, her eyes widening in disbelief. "She’s holding the entire judiciary hostage from a prison cell?"
"She’s backed into a corner, and my mother never learned how to lose gracefully," Marcus said, looking directly at Chloe. "She wants a deal. She sent word through her attorney. She wants all charges dropped, full restoration of her estate control, and a private chartered flight out of the country before dawn tomorrow. Otherwise, she pulls the trigger."
Chloe felt a cold wave of panic wash over her, but she forced herself to look down at her baby, whose steady breathing grounded her in the present moment. "We don't negotiate with terrorists, Marcus. Not even your mother."
"If she executes that protocol, the federal government will declare a state of emergency, and every asset tied to the Vance name—including the restitution trust I just signed over to your family—will be seized indefinitely under national security laws," Marcus explained urgently. "You won't see a dime of restitution, and my family name will become a permanent stain on legal history."
"Then let it be a stain," Margaret said coldly. "We survived thirty years without her blood money, and we will survive whatever she leaks from a prison cell. You can't let a criminal blackmail the entire country just to save her own skin."
Marcus looked defeated, his shoulders dropping as he realized the tragic truth of his mother’s absolute cruelty. "There’s only one way to stop the server before the twelve-hour timer expires," he whispered.
All eyes turned to him. "What way?" Chloe asked.

"I have the master encryption key," Marcus said softly, pulling a small silver flash drive from his pocket. "It was wired directly into my personal neural-link security token when I took over as chief technical officer. But to deactivate the server... I have to connect it manually to the primary terminal inside the subterranean vault at the estate before midnight."
