Chapter 10 - The Unraveling Empire

Within forty-eight hours, the Vance family dynasty—built over half a century of ruthless corporate acquisitions and hidden sins—began to disintegrate under the relentless glare of national media. Financial markets reacted with immediate panic, wiping billions of dollars off the valuation of Vance Healthcare and its associated subsidiaries.
Back at the hospital, Chloe sat propped up in her bed, watching the wall-mounted television screen display live helicopter footage of federal agents hauling boxes of seized documents out of the marble-columned headquarters of the Vance Foundation downtown.
Nurse Miller walked in carrying a breakfast tray, her expression a mix of awe and deep concern. "You’ve got a visitor, honey. And before you say no, it’s not Marcus or his mother."
Chloe turned her head, her heart skipping a beat as a middle-aged woman with silver-streaked dark hair and soft, familiar brown eyes stepped through the doorway. The woman stopped a few feet away, her hands trembling as she clutched a worn leather handbag against her chest.
"Hello, Chloe," the woman whispered, her voice cracking with decades of suppressed grief and wonder.
Chloe stared at her, the facial features mirroring her own in the small vanity mirror across the room. The jawline, the shape of the eyes, the way the hands folded together—it was like looking into a ghostly window thirty years into the future.
"Mom?" Chloe breathed, tears instantly blurring her vision.
Margaret Davis dropped her bag to the floor and rushed forward, burying her face in Chloe’s shoulder as they both wept into the hospital linens. The decades of stolen memories, phantom grief, and institutional lies melted away in the warmth of a reunion that defied the worst that human greed could orchestrate.
"They told me you were gone," Margaret sobbed softly against Chloe's collarbone. "For thirty years, they told me my baby didn't survive the night."
"They lied," Chloe whispered back, gently pulling the patterned blanket back to reveal the sleeping newborn nestled safely between them. "They lied to us both. But look at what they couldn't destroy."
Margaret reached out a trembling hand, her fingers gently brushing the baby's cheek. "My granddaughter," she whispered, a radiant smile breaking through her tears.

At that exact moment, the door pushed open again, and Marcus stood in the frame, holding a manila envelope stamped with a court-appointed restitution order.
