Chapter 4 - Echoes of a Stolen Cradle

Nurse Miller finally lowered her arm, sensing that the dynamic in the room had fundamentally shifted from an assault to an implosion. She stepped back toward the charting station, keeping a watchful eye on Elena, who stood frozen between her son and the bed like a general whose army had deserted her mid-battle.
"Thirty years ago," Chloe whispered, her voice cracking as she relived the horror that had haunted her family for generations, "your mother paid off a compromised obstetrician to take my mother's healthy baby girl and hand her to a frightened, unmarried teenager in a back-alley clinic, while telling my mother her child was stillborn."
Elena let out a harsh, bitter laugh. "A ridiculous melodrama fit for a cheap paperback. You have no proof of any transaction, no paper trail, and no witnesses. The doctor died in a car accident in ninety-two."
"He didn't die in an accident," Marcus said, pulling a second, thicker manila folder from his leather briefcase and laying it flat on the bedside table next to the broken wax seal. "He retired to Argentina under an alias funded by a Vance Foundation subsidiary account. I found the bank statements, Mother. They were signed by your own hand."
The air in the room grew suffocating. Elena stared at her son as if he were a complete stranger. The cold authority that had defined her public persona for decades began to dissolve, replaced by a desperate, cornered fury.
"You are destroying everything," Elena whispered, her voice trembling with repressed rage. "Do you have any idea what will happen to the stock prices? The foundations, the trusts, the hospital boards? If the public learns that a Vance was illegally trafficked at birth, the entire empire collapses overnight."
"Let it burn," Marcus replied without a second's hesitation. He looked at Chloe, his eyes shining with unshed tears. "We need to talk about the baby."
Chloe pulled the patterned blanket tighter around the infant, her protective instincts flaring up again. "There is nothing to talk about. This is my daughter. My blood. End of story."

"Is it?" Marcus asked softly, pointing gently at the hospital bassinet where a second set of DNA verification documents lay waiting. "Look at the mother's birth records again, Chloe. The hospital didn't just switch one baby thirty years ago. They switched two."
