Chapter 13 - Descent into the Subterranean Vault

Midnight cast long, jagged shadows across the sprawling, abandoned grounds of the Vance estate. The grand iron gates stood half-open, their heavy hinges rusted and groaning in the brisk autumn wind.
Marcus’s luxury sedan crunched over the gravel driveway, parking directly in front of the massive double oak doors of the main manor. He stepped out into the biting cold, wearing his charcoal suit jacket pulled tight against the chill. He didn't bother locking the car; time was running out. The timer on his phone displayed forty-five minutes remaining before the offshore server automatically released the encrypted archive.
He pushed open the heavy front doors, stepping into the cavernous foyer where dust motes danced in the pale moonlight filtering through the skylight. He walked straight toward the library, ignoring the portraits of stern ancestors lining the walls—ancestors who had apparently passed down a generational curse of deception and power-lust.
Reaching the mahogany desk, he pressed his thumb against the biometric scanner. The concealed wall panel slid open with a smooth, mechanical hum. He climbed down the narrow spiral metal staircase hidden behind the safe, descending into the subterranean archives where his father had spent his final, miserable years drinking away his regrets.
The air down here was damp and smelled of old paper, concrete, and ozone. A single overhead bulb cast a harsh, yellowish glow over the central terminal—a massive, military-grade server rack humming quietly in the corner of the concrete bunker.
Marcus crossed the room, pulled a ruggedized laptop from his briefcase, and plugged the silver flash drive into the master port of the server rack.
Lines of green code began scrolling rapidly across the screen. “DECRYPTION IN PROGRESS... ACCESSING MAIN ARCHIVE... WARNING: USER PRIVILEGES RESTRICTED.”
"Come on," Marcus muttered under his breath, his fingers flying across the keyboard to input the master override command.
Suddenly, the screen flashed a brilliant, blinding crimson. “ACCESS DENIED. BIOMETRIC OVERRIDE REQUIRED FROM PRIMARY ADMINISTRATOR: ELENA VANCE.”
Marcus slammed his hand against the desk in sheer frustration. His mother had locked him out of the master override using her own prisoner credentials from the county jail terminal.
His phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out, seeing an incoming encrypted video call from an unknown number. With shaking fingers, he swiped to answer.
Elena’s face appeared on the small screen, illuminated by the harsh fluorescent light of her holding cell. She wasn't wearing her burgundy blazer now; she wore a standard orange jumpsuit, yet her posture remained rigid, her cold authority entirely intact.

"Did you really think you could outsmart me, Marcus?" Elena’s voice crackled through the speaker, dripping with absolute contempt. "I built this vault. I wrote the protocols. And unless you sign over the remaining foundation assets back into my legal trust within five minutes, I press the release button."
