Chapter 1 - The Threshold of Shattered Lies

The sterile scent of antiseptic hung heavy in the postpartum recovery room, mixing with the sharp copper tang of lingering adrenaline. Sunlight cut through the vertical blinds, casting sharp stripes across the linoleum floor.
Nurse Miller stood with her arm rigidly outstretched, her grey scrubs rustling as she braced herself between the doorway and the bed. Her blonde ponytail bounced slightly with her heavy, controlled breathing. Behind her, Chloe clutched the bundle against her chest, her light blue hospital gown bunched around her trembling shoulders. The newborn stirred, whimpering softly beneath a pale blue patterned blanket.
Elena Vance strode past the threshold, the rich burgundy of her tailored blazer absorbing the pale light. Her short auburn hair was styled with immaculate precision, matching the cold, unyielding authority etched into every line of her face. She stopped three feet from the bed, her dark eyes narrowing as she locked onto the infant.
"Don't let her near my baby," Nurse Miller whispered, her voice tight with fierce, protective warning.
Elena didn't look at the nurse. Her gaze remained fixed on the young mother. She stepped closer, her heels clicking rhythmically against the floor. "I only came to see my granddaughter."
Chloe looked down, her tearful, anxious eyes blinking rapidly to fight off a fresh wave of panic. She shook her head slowly, her knuckles turning white as she tightened her grip on the infant. "She's not your granddaughter."
Elena’s eyes widened in sudden shock, a flicker of dark, defensive anger burning through her composed exterior. Her posture stiffened further. "What did you say?"
Chloe didn't flinch. With trembling fingers, she pointed past Elena’s hip, directing the older woman's attention toward the wooden hospital tray table sitting near the visitor's chair. Resting quietly in the center of the tray was a pristine, sealed white envelope stamped with a heavy, gleaming silver wax seal bearing the Vance family crest.
"The DNA results came back," Chloe whispered.
May you like
Elena slowly turned her head, her breath catching in her throat as she stared down at the silver seal that she instantly recognized as her late husband's personal signet ring stamp.
