Chapter 1: The Weight of Silence**

The echoes of Julian’s voice still hung heavy in the grand foyer. *"Emily isn't going anywhere."* Standing on the bottom step, Emily felt her breath hitch. Victoria’s face transformed from triumphant malice to naked horror. The guests, dressed in pristine tuxedos and designer gowns, froze in stunned silence. Julian remained composed, his fingers pressing a button on the remote console. The video looped again on the large digital screen—Victoria slipping the three-carat family heirloom into Emily’s worn leather bag.
"Julian, this is a misunderstanding," Victoria stammered, smoothing down her black gown with trembling fingers. "She manipulated the footage. She—"
"Enough, Victoria," Julian said, his tone razor-sharp. "The system is encrypted with biometric keys. Only you and I have access to that corridor's feed."
Emily slowly pulled herself off the cold hardwood. For two years, she had scrubbed their floors, polished their silver, and endured Victoria’s subtle indignities, all to send money back home for her mother’s dialysis treatments. She had never asked for charity, only fair pay and basic dignity. Being branded a criminal before fifty high-society guests felt like a physical blow.
"Pack your bags, Victoria," Julian said quietly. "My lawyers will be here by morning."
Victoria looked around the room, desperately seeking an ally, but the guests averted their eyes. With a hiss of frustration, she spun around and stormed up the spiral staircase, her heels clicking aggressively against the wood.
Julian turned to Emily, his eyes softening with genuine regret. "I’m sorry, Emily. I knew something was wrong when she insisted on searching your locker personally. I had security reroute the feed."
"Thank you, Mr. Vance," Emily whispered, wiping tears from her cheeks.

"You don't need to thank me for doing what's right," he replied. "Take the rest of the week off with pay. We have much to discuss."
