Six months later, the federal court was packed to capacity for the trial of Victoria Vance and Arthur Sterling.
Emily sat in the witness box, wearing a tailored charcoal blazer. Her posture was calm, her voice steady as she answered the prosecutor’s questions. She recounted the events step by step: the planting of the ring, the threats in the sedan, and the discovery of the hard drive.
When Victoria’s defense attorney attempted to paint Emily as an opportunist seeking financial gain, Emily calmly produced her original bank statements, showing years of meager savings and selfless remittances to her mother's care.
"I never asked for wealth," Emily stated clearly to the jury. "I only asked for justice. Wealth without honesty is just gilded poverty."
The jury deliberated for less than three hours. Victoria Vance was found guilty on all counts of grand larceny, fraud, and framing an innocent citizen. Arthur Sterling received a twelve-year federal prison sentence.
