Chapter 2: Shadows in the Mansion**

Emily couldn't sleep that night in the staff quarters. The quiet hum of the estate felt oppressive. At 2:00 a.m., a knock sounded at her door.
Expecting Mrs. Gable, the head housekeeper, Emily unlocked it, only to find Julian standing under the corridor's dim sconce. He wasn't in his tailored suit anymore; he wore a simple charcoal sweater, looking exhausted and carrying a thick manila folder.
"I need to show you something," Julian said softly. "It's about why she targeted you."
Emily sat at her small kitchen table as Julian opened the file. Inside were financial audits, offshore account statements, and forged signatures—all bearing Victoria’s name and Emily’s employee identification number.
"Victoria didn't just want to fire you," Julian explained, pointing to a wire transfer receipt. "She's been embezzling from my foundation's medical relief fund for over eight months. She opened shell accounts using your personal tax forms from HR. Framing you for the ring was meant to discredit you entirely, so when federal auditors arrived next month, the blame would fall on a convicted thief."
Emily gasped, the room spinning around her. "She was going to destroy my entire life."
"She almost did," Julian said grimly. "She underestimated how deeply I look into the details. But now, the board needs to hear the truth from both of us. If you’re willing, I want you to testify at the emergency board hearing on Friday."
"I’m just a maid, Mr. Vance. Who will listen to me?"

Julian looked directly into her eyes. "Truth doesn't care about titles, Emily. Character does."
