Chapter 9 - The Ghost in the Lobby

The smartphone screen glowed brightly against the dim interior of the penthouse kitchen, casting eerie shadows across Evelyn’s pale, sweat-slicked face. Her eyes remained locked on the live security feed streaming from the lobby downstairs. The man standing near the grand marble reception desk was older, his hair dusted with silver at the temples, but his posture and sharp, intelligent features were utterly unmistakable.

It was David.

Evelyn dropped the phone onto the marble kitchen island as if it had suddenly burst into flames. The device clattered loudly against the stone surface, the video feed still active and broadcasting live audio up into the quiet penthouse. She stumbled backward, clutching her head with both hands as a wave of intense vertigo washed over her.

"No," she whispered frantically to the empty room, her voice trembling violently. "That's impossible. He disappeared. The settlement... the police reports... it was all finalized two decades ago!"

She rushed back to the floor-to-ceiling windows, pressing her face against the cool glass to look down at the front entrance below. Through the shimmering afternoon heat, she watched as Maya walked out of the revolving glass doors and rushed directly into David’s open arms. The older man embraced his daughter tightly, kissing the top of her head before looking up—directly toward the tenth-floor penthouse windows, as if he knew precisely which pane of glass she was staring through.

Evelyn recoiled from the window, gasping for air as a primal terror gripped her chest. If David was alive, and standing freely in the very building he supposedly lost everything in, then the official story of his ruin wasn't just a lie—it was an elaborate, decades-long trap designed to lure Richard and her into a false sense of absolute security.

The smart speaker on the kitchen counter suddenly chimed again, breaking the heavy silence of the apartment.

Evelyn froze. She slowly turned her head toward the small white device, watching as the blue indicator light pulsed rhythmically.

"Evelyn," David’s calm, measured voice resonated clearly through the speaker, carrying effortlessly up from the lobby intercom. "You can stop looking out the window now. The view from up there was always built on borrowed time anyway."

Evelyn’s legs buckled, and she slid down the kitchen cabinets until she hit the floor once more. Her hands dug into her hair as she realized the true depth of the game they had stumbled into. Maya hadn't just legally dismantled their empire; she had executed a precision strike orchestrated by a man who had waited twenty years for his moment of absolute reckoning.

"What do you want from me?" Evelyn cried out toward the empty kitchen, her voice cracking with defeat. "You took the penthouse! You took the accounts! What more could you possibly want?"

The intercom remained silent for a long moment before David’s voice returned, softer this time, but infinitely colder.

"I want you to pack a single suitcase, Evelyn," David instructed smoothly. "And bring down the original paper files hidden in the basement storage locker. The ones detailing the night you helped Richard alter my signature."
