Chapter 6 - The Empty Vault

The photograph inside the empty safe seemed to radiate a cold, mocking energy. Richard stared at the smiling face of David in the picture, his hands trembling so violently that the paper fluttered out of his grip and drifted slowly down to settle on the polished wooden floor. His mind raced frantically, trying to calculate how Maya could have accessed their personal, high-security offshore accounts without the physical passcodes.
Across the spacious master bedroom, Evelyn was aggressively pulling velvet-lined drawers out of the mahogany dresser, dumping expensive jewelry, diamond necklaces, and luxury watches into an open leather duffel bag. When she heard Richard’s ragged, terrified breathing, she stopped and whipped her head around.
"Did you get the cash?" Evelyn demanded, marching toward the safe with her eyes narrowed. "Hurry up! We need to wire the Swiss accounts before the banks flag our SSNs."
Richard stood up slowly from the floor, his face completely drained of color. He pointed a shaking finger toward the open, empty metal box embedded in the wall.
Evelyn stared into the hollow interior of the safe. For a long, terrifying moment, absolute silence filled the room. Then, the color drained entirely from her face, and she dropped the duffel bag of jewelry onto the floor with a heavy thud. Diamonds and gold chains spilled out across the rug, forgotten.
"What do you mean, it's empty?" Evelyn whispered, her voice barely a breath. "That safe requires biometric thumbprints and a rotating six-digit cryptographic code known only to you and the Swiss bank!"
"She must have mirrored our private network when she cloned the deed access," Richard stammered, running his hands through his damp hair in mounting panic. "She didn't just take fifty percent of the building, Evelyn. She bypassed our firewall. She has total administrative control over every digital asset we own. We are completely, financially eradicated."
Evelyn grabbed the edge of the dresser, her knuckles turning white as her knees buckled slightly. The reality of their situation crashed down upon her with crushing force. All the status, the high-end social circle, the designer clothes, the pristine penthouse overlooking the city—it was all gone in a single morning. And they were legally trapped inside a building where their worst enemy now held all the cards.
"We need to call the police," Evelyn said suddenly, her eyes widening with a desperate, frantic hope. "We’ll report a cyber-robbery! We’ll tell them she hacked us and blackmailed us!"
Before Richard could answer, the master bedroom’s smart speaker chimed pleasantly, signaling an incoming audio intercom broadcast from the front door downstairs.
Maya’s calm, melodic voice filtered effortlessly through the high-end sound system, echoing clearly off the vaulted ceilings of the penthouse.
"I wouldn't bother calling the authorities, Evelyn," Maya’s voice purred through the speakers, laced with subtle amusement. "Especially since the financial crimes division has already received the preliminary audit of your shell companies. In fact, if you look out the living room window right now, you might just catch the arrival of our very special guests."

Evelyn and Richard exchanged a look of pure, unadulterated horror. They rushed across the sprawling suite, bursting through the arched entryway into the sunlit living room, and sprinted toward the massive floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the front courtyard.
