Chapter 5 - The Midnight Deadline

The heavy glass lobby door clicked shut behind Maya, leaving Evelyn and Richard alone by the sun-drenched pool. The silence that followed was suffocating, broken only by the rhythmic splashing of the pool’s automated filtration system. Evelyn stood frozen on the hot concrete, the black leather planner still clutched tightly against her chest like a talisman against the encroaching disaster. Her designer sunglasses finally slipped off her face, clattering onto the tiles and shattering into pieces, but she didn't even look down.
Richard dragged himself out of the water, his striped swim trunks dripping puddles onto the pristine deck. He stumbled slightly, his bare feet slipping on the wet surface before he caught his balance against a green lounge chair. He looked older now, the confident, wealthy property owner facade completely stripped away, revealing a desperate, cornered man.
"Evelyn, listen to me," Richard panted, reaching out a wet hand to grab her arm. "We need to pack. Now. If those files reach the D.A., I’m looking at federal prison time for fraud and extortion. Everything we own will be seized."
Evelyn recoiled from his touch as if he had burned her. Her eyes flashed with sudden, blinding fury. She swung her arm and struck Richard across the face with the heavy leather planner, the sharp corner grazing his cheek and leaving a red mark.
"Don't touch me!" Evelyn screamed, her voice cracking with hysteria. "You idiot! You absolute, arrogant fool! For fifteen years, I played the society wife, I hosted your clients, I maintained this fake illusion of perfection, and all this time you built our entire empire on a stolen foundation!"
Richard stumbled back, clutching his stinging cheek. He didn't yell back; he simply took the blow, knowing every word she spoke was the absolute truth. "Anger won't fix this, Evelyn. Yelling won't make the flash drive disappear. We have until midnight. We need to gather whatever liquid cash and untraceable assets we have left in the safe and get out of the country before she locks us out of the accounts."
Evelyn stared at him, her chest heaving as she processed the sheer magnitude of their downfall. The luxurious penthouse looming above them suddenly felt like a tomb. Without another word, she turned and sprinted toward the lobby doors, her bare feet slapping rapidly against the concrete.
Richard followed closely behind her, dripping water onto the pristine marble floors of the grand foyer as they rushed to the private elevator. They punched the penthouse button frantically, watching the digital floor numbers tick upward with agonizing slowness. When the doors slid open, they rushed inside, slamming the close-door button over and over.
Upstairs, the penthouse was quiet, bathed in the soft morning light filtering through floor-to-ceiling windows. Evelyn threw open the master bedroom closet, tearing designer clothes off their hangers and tossing them wildly onto the king-size bed. Richard spun the heavy combination dial of the wall safe hidden behind a modern art painting, his fingers shaking so badly he had to restart the sequence three times.

As the heavy steel door of the safe finally clicked open, Richard reached inside—only to freeze completely. The safe was entirely empty. Every single stack of emergency cash, every bearer bond, and every hidden passport was gone, replaced neatly by a single printed photograph of Maya’s father smiling outside the building twenty years ago, with a fresh sticky note attached that read: "Checking accounts were frozen an hour ago. Tick-tock."
