Chapter 7 - Sirens in the Courtyard

The panoramic view from the penthouse living room offered a stark, terrifying reality check. Down below, parked haphazardly across the manicured turf and the private driveway, were three unmarked dark blue sedans and a marked police cruiser. Red and blue emergency lights flashed silently against the sleek, modern glass facades of the surrounding high-rise buildings, casting an eerie, pulsating glow across the courtyard.
Several men and women in dark windbreakers bearing federal investigation insignia stepped out of the vehicles, flanked by local uniformed officers. Leading the group, holding a leather folder and walking with absolute authority, was Maya. She looked up toward the penthouse windows, removed her designer sunglasses, and met Richard and Evelyn’s horrified gazes through the glass. Even from ten stories up, Maya gave them a slow, polite nod of acknowledgment before turning to direct the federal agents toward the grand lobby entrance.
"They're here," Richard whispered, stepping back from the glass as if physical distance could somehow protect him from the approaching inevitability. He stumbled against the edge of a custom glass coffee table, nearly tipping it over. "It's over, Evelyn. They move fast. Too fast."
Evelyn’s hands flew to her mouth, her chest heaving as silent panic turned into hyperventilation. The immaculate facade she had meticulously maintained for over a decade was crumbling into dust before her eyes. "We have to run," she hissed, grabbing Richard by the lapels of his wrinkled shirt and shaking him with unexpected strength. "There's the service stairs behind the kitchen! We can take the alley to the underground parking garage and take my car!"
"Your car keys were in the safe, Evelyn!" Richard shouted back, losing his temper as reality finally shattered his denial. "And even if they weren't, every exit from this property is currently sealed by federal marshals!"
A heavy, echoing thud suddenly reverberated through the penthouse. Someone was pounding firmly on the heavy mahogany front door.
"Federal agents! Open up!" a deep, authoritative voice commanded from the hallway, followed by a second, heavier knock that rattled the doorframe.
Evelyn backed away until she hit the wall, sliding down slowly until she sat on the hardwood floor, her designer red tunic rumpled and stained with dust. She pulled her knees to her chest, rocking back and forth softly as the sounds of the officers outside grew more insistent.
Richard stood frozen in the center of the spacious living room, staring at the front door. He knew that opening it meant walking into handcuffs, financial ruin, and a lengthy prison sentence. But standing still meant facing the full, unstoppable force of a battering ram.
The heavy knocking stopped abruptly. A cold, mechanical buzzing sound echoed through the foyer—the electronic lock system disengaging remotely.
The front door swung slowly open, revealing the tall, imposing figure of the lead federal investigator stepping into the foyer, flanked by two armed officers. But standing right behind them, holding a small tablet computer that displayed the building's administrative override codes, was Maya. She stepped gracefully over the threshold into the penthouse, her dark blue swimsuit replaced by a sharp, professional black blazer and trousers, looking every bit the ruthless corporate owner she had legally become.
Maya stopped in the center of the foyer, looking down with cold satisfaction at Richard standing paralyzed in the living room and Evelyn cowering against the wall.

"Welcome home, Richard," Maya said evenly, her voice echoing in the silent apartment. "Or should I say... welcome to your new reality."
