Chapter 13 - The Underground Override

The red emergency light pulsed rhythmically against the pristine marble walls of the lobby, casting an urgent crimson glow across the faces of everyone in the room. Maya’s fingers danced across her tablet screen, swiping rapidly through system diagnostics as the building’s internal security network began chiming insistently.

"What is it?" David asked, stepping quickly to his daughter's side, his eyes fixed on the tablet display.

"Someone is physically overriding the main electrical grid from the sub-level parking garage," Maya said, her voice dropping into a tense whisper. "The backup generator has been tripped, and all exit gates have been locked down remotely."

A.D.A. Vance stood up, looking at the local law enforcement officers nearby. "Check the perimeter doors. Nobody leaves the property."

Richard let out a sudden, bitter laugh, struggling slightly against the grip of the federal marshals holding him. "You think you locked down every exit, don't you?" Richard sneered, a manic glint in his eye. "You forgot about the emergency maintenance tunnel. The one leading directly from the sub-level garage to the municipal water plant two blocks away."

Evelyn whipped her head around to stare at Richard, her breath catching in her throat. "Who is down there?" she demanded frantically. "If the corporate partners dropped you, who else knows about the override code?"

Before Richard could answer, the lobby’s main overhead lights flickered violently and died. The entire ground floor plunged into sudden semi-darkness, illuminated only by the flashing red emergency beacons and the glowing screens of the investigators' laptops.

From deep within the stairwell leading down to the parking garage, a heavy, metallic slam echoed through the building, followed by the sound of hurried footsteps running toward the ground-floor exit door.

"Federal agents! Halt!" shouted one of the armed officers stationed near the stairwell entrance, raising his flashlight and service weapon toward the heavy fire door.

The door burst open with a loud crash. A tall, heavyset man in a dark maintenance uniform stumbled out into the lobby, panting heavily. In his hand, he clutched a heavy laptop wired directly into a portable circuit breaker unit. It was Viktor, the building's head superintendent—the man Richard had secretly paid off for over a decade to keep the basement files hidden away.

Viktor froze as he saw the dozen law enforcement officers pointing weapons in his direction. He dropped his portable circuit breaker unit onto the floor with a loud clatter, raising both hands slowly in the air.

"Don't shoot! Don't shoot!" Viktor yelled, backing up against a marble pillar. "I was just following orders! Mr. Vance told me to wipe the secondary server if federal agents ever showed up!"

Richard closed his eyes for a brief second, muttering a curse under his breath. The last line of defense had just collapsed.

Maya walked calmly toward Viktor, her tablet still glowing in her hand. She stopped a few feet away from the terrified superintendent, looking down at the dropped circuit breaker unit before shifting her gaze back to Viktor’s sweating face.

"You didn't manage to wipe the secondary server, Viktor," Maya said quietly, her voice carrying clearly across the silent lobby. "Because I mirrored the mainframe routes three days ago when I first sat by the pool."

Viktor swallowed hard, lowering his hands slowly as two local officers stepped forward to secure his wrists with zip-ties.

As Viktor was led toward the exit, a small, unsecured flash drive slipped from his front shirt pocket, skidding across the polished marble floor and stopping right at David’s polished shoes. David looked down, bent over slowly, and picked it up. He examined the tiny device, a grim smile touching the corners of his mouth.
