Chapter 3 - The Signature of Betrayal

The pages of the black leather planner flipped frantically under Evelyn’s trembling fingers, the sound echoing loudly in the quiet courtyard. The harsh morning sun beat down on her back, but she felt a cold sweat breaking out across her skin. Her eyes scanned the legal document clipped to page forty-two, her breath catching in her throat as she recognized the unmistakable signature at the bottom of the page. It was signed in bold, dark ink by Richard’s own hand.

"No," Evelyn whispered, her voice cracking as denial washed over her. She shook her head violently, looking up from the paper to glare at Richard, who was still treading water in the middle of the pool. "Richard, explain this. What is this? You told me our assets were secure! You said this building belonged entirely to us!"

Richard’s face contorted into a mask of desperate frustration. He swam rapidly to the edge, slapping his hands against the water in anger. "Evelyn, keep your voice down! You don't understand the kind of financial pressure we were under. The market crashed, the investments tanked, and this was the only way to keep the creditors from seizing our personal accounts."

Maya walked slowly back toward them, her bare feet making soft padding sounds on the warm turf. She crossed her arms over her dark blue swimsuit, looking down at the bickering couple with an expression of cold amusement. The dynamic between Richard and Evelyn had shifted instantly from a united front of entitled authority to a crumbling partnership built on lies and financial ruin.

"Fifty percent ownership," Maya reminded them smoothly, tilting her head. "Which legally grants me access to this pool, this penthouse, and every single financial audit of the building's management accounts. Starting right now."

Evelyn climbed slowly to her feet, clutching the leather planner to her chest like a shield. Her initial rage had transformed into a bitter, calculating despair. She glared at Maya, her eyes narrowing behind her designer sunglasses. "You didn't just stumble into this purchase by coincidence," Evelyn accused, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "Who are you really, and what do you want from us?"

Maya stepped closer, invading Evelyn’s personal space with chilling confidence. She reached out and gently tapped the white clip holding Evelyn’s brown hair in a bun.

"I want the same thing my father wanted twenty years ago," Maya whispered coldly, leaning in until her lips brushed Evelyn's ear. "Justice for what happened on these exact grounds."

Richard let out a sharp, choked gasp from the water, his eyes widening in sheer terror as he finally connected the pieces of the puzzle.
