Chapter 4 - Ghosts of the Past

The word 'justice' hung suspended in the heavy morning air, triggering an invisible shockwave that left both Evelyn and Richard paralyzed. Richard’s hands slipped off the pool tile, causing him to dip beneath the surface for a brief second before he sputtered and kicked his way back up, gasping for air. His face had turned an unhealthy shade of pale, contrasting sharply with his sun-browned shoulders.
"Twenty years ago," Richard muttered, his voice trembling so badly the words were barely audible. He looked at Maya with eyes wide in disbelief and growing dread. "That’s impossible. David... David signed the settlement agreement. He took the buyout and left the city. He couldn't have..."
"My father didn't take a buyout," Maya interrupted, her voice dropping all pretense of playfulness, turning into a chilling, metallic edge. She lowered her arms, her posture stiffening as she glared directly into Richard's panicked eyes. "He was forced out. You and your corporate partners manufactured a false embezzlement scandal, froze his accounts, and drove him to the brink of ruin. And all because he refused to sign away the architectural rights to this very complex."
Evelyn stepped back, her manicured hands gripping the black leather planner until her knuckles turned white. "This is absurd!" Evelyn protested, though her voice lacked its earlier fiery conviction. She looked back and forth between Richard and Maya, panic flaring in her chest. "Richard, what is she talking about? Who is David?"
Richard refused to meet Evelyn’s eyes. He stared down at the rippling turquoise water of the pool, his chest heaving as he fought to control his breathing. The pristine luxury of the apartment complex suddenly felt like a cage closing in around them. The modern high-rise buildings towering above seemed to press down with the weight of decades of hidden sins.
"You ruined his life," Maya continued, her tone dangerously calm, making it all the more terrifying. "He spent the last ten years of his life watching you live in luxury off the profits of his stolen vision. But karma has a funny way of balancing the books. Now, I own half of this building. And legally, financially, and personally, I am going to dismantle everything you two built."
Evelyn’s face flushed red with a mixture of fear and insulted pride. "You think you can just walk in here and take over?" Evelyn snapped, her voice rising in pitch. "We have lawyers, we have contracts, and we have lived in this penthouse for fifteen years!"
Maya smiled slowly, pulling a small silver flash drive from the pocket of her towel. She held it up between her fingers, letting it catch the blinding morning glare. "You have fifteen years of lies," Maya corrected softly. "And I have the hard evidence stored right here that proves Richard falsified the original property deeds. The police are going to find it fascinating."
Richard lunged forward, grabbing the pool edge and pulling his upper body out of the water, desperation written all over his face. "Wait," Richard pleaded, his voice cracking. "Let's talk about this. We can make a deal. Whatever you want—shares, money, property—we can negotiate."
Maya turned her back on him, walking toward the grand glass lobby doors of the apartment building. She paused with her hand on the brass handle, looking back over her shoulder with a piercing gaze.

"There is only one deal on the table," Maya said quietly. "By midnight tonight, you pack your bags and leave this penthouse forever. Or I release the files to the district attorney."
