Chapter 11 - The Prosecutor's Arrival

The grand lobby of the apartment building had been transformed into a temporary administrative hub. Two folding tables were set up near the mailroom, covered in laptops, digital scanners, and stacks of legal paperwork. Several local law enforcement officers stood near the glass entrance, while at the center table sat Assistant District Attorney Marcus Vance—a sharp, professional man in his late thirties whose intense gaze mirrored Maya’s.

Evelyn walked slowly through the revolving glass doors, dragging the heavy metal drawer of the filing cabinet behind her across the smooth marble floor. The harsh screeching sound echoed off the high ceilings, drawing the attention of everyone in the room. She looked exhausted, her hair messy, the red tunic wrinkled and stained with dust from the basement.

Maya stood beside the A.D.A.’s table, watching Evelyn approach with an expression of cold, unrelenting detachment.

"Set it right there," A.D.A. Vance instructed calmly, gesturing to the empty space on the folding table. His voice was steady and professional.

Evelyn released the metal handle, letting the drawer slide forward with a dull thud. She stood upright, rubbing her sore hands together, and looked around the lobby that she had once treated like her own private kingdom. Every resident who walked past outside cast brief, curious glances through the glass, whispering among themselves as they recognized the fallen socialite.

"Is this the complete archive?" A.D.A. Vance asked, flipping open the top manila folder and scanning the yellowed pages of forged signatures and fraudulent asset transfers.

"Every single document," David answered, stepping into the lobby from the elevators and taking a seat beside the prosecutor. He placed his folder down next to Evelyn’s drawer. "Every paper trail, every shell company registration, and every falsified board resolution from twenty years ago."

Evelyn lowered her head, staring at the polished marble tiles between her bare feet. "What happens to me now?" she asked quietly, her usual arrogant authority completely erased.

A.D.A. Vance looked up from the documents, studying Evelyn for a long moment before speaking. "Cooperation with the district attorney's office and a full, recorded confession detailing Richard’s concealment methods will significantly reduce your sentencing recommendations," the prosecutor explained measuredly. "Otherwise, you will face federal conspiracy charges alongside him, carrying a minimum of ten years without parole."

Evelyn swallowed hard, the weight of the choice pressing down on her chest. Ten years in federal prison versus turning on the man she had spent fifteen years building an empire with. The calculation was brutal, but simple. Richard had lied to her about the safe, hidden the offshore accounts, and left her to take the fall when Maya arrived. He had abandoned their partnership the moment things went wrong.

"I’ll sign," Evelyn whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the lobby air conditioning. "I’ll tell you everything about the shell accounts in the Caymans."

Maya watched Evelyn sign the preliminary confession document handed to her by the prosecutor, her expression softening just a fraction—not with pity, but with the quiet closure of a long chapter finally ending.

Just as A.D.A. Vance reached out to collect the signed paperwork, the glass lobby doors pushed open forcefully. Two federal marshals marched back inside, escorting a disheveled Richard in handcuffs, returning from his initial holding intake. Richard stopped dead in his tracks as he saw Evelyn standing at the table, signing her name next to the prosecutor’s stamp, surrounded by the physical files of their entire conspiracy.
