Chapter 12 - The Confrontation in the Foyer

The air in the grand lobby went completely dead as Richard froze in his handcuffs, his eyes darting from the stack of manila folders on the folding table to Evelyn standing beside A.D.A. Vance. The realization of what had just happened hit him like a physical blow. His face twisted in a mixture of utter betrayal and desperate fury.

"Evelyn, what the hell are you doing?" Richard shouted, straining against the grip of the federal marshals as he took a step forward. "You're signing our lives away! Don't listen to them, they're bluffing!"

Evelyn didn't look up immediately. She kept her pen pressed against the paper until she finished the final stroke of her signature, then slowly straightened her back. When she finally turned to face him, all the fear in her eyes had been replaced by a cold, hardened resentment.

"I'm saving myself, Richard," Evelyn said evenly, her voice remarkably steady. "You emptied the safe. You lied about the offshore accounts. You planned to run and leave me here to face federal prison alone. Don't talk to me about loyalty now."

"Shut your mouth!" Richard roared, lunging forward again before the marshals forcefully shoved him back, pressing him against the marble pillar near the entrance. "We built this together! You knew every single detail of the shell companies from day one!"

"And now I'm detailing every single one of them for the prosecutor," Evelyn retorted sharply, tossing the pen onto the table. She stepped away from the desk, standing tall despite her disheveled appearance.

A.D.A. Vance raised a hand to silence the escalating argument, gesturing for the marshals to pull Richard back toward the seating area. "Mr. Vance, your outbursts aren't going to change the physical evidence piling up on this table," the prosecutor said calmly. "Your wife has chosen to cooperate. I suggest you consult with your public defender about doing the same."

Richard glared across the lobby at David, who sat quietly observing the exchange from his chair. The bitter hatred in Richard’s eyes burned hotter than ever. "You," Richard spat out, his voice shaking with venom. "You think you've won? You think taking this building and putting me in a cell fixes what happened? My corporate partners will crush you the moment I'm out on bail!"

David stood up slowly from his chair, adjusting his jacket with quiet dignity. He walked a few paces closer to Richard, stopping just out of arm's reach.

"Your corporate partners abandoned you the moment the first subpoena was filed, Richard," David replied smoothly, his voice calm and unshakeable. "They dissolved the parent corporation yesterday morning. You were the fall guy from the very beginning. You just didn't realize it because you were too busy enjoying the view from the penthouse."

Richard’s mouth opened slightly, the remaining color draining from his face as David’s words dismantled the last illusion of his safety. The empire he thought he controlled had been built on quicksand, and the tide had finally come in.

Before Richard could formulate a response, a loud, synchronized buzzing echoed from the management office behind the reception desk. A red emergency light began flashing on the building’s main master control panel, signaling an automated system override originating from the basement parking facility.

Maya stepped forward, pulling out her tablet to check the incoming system alert. As she read the screen, her facial expression shifted instantly from calm confidence to sudden, sharp alarm.
