Chapter 9 - The House of Cards

The boardroom was vast, dominated by a massive, custom-built mahogany table that seated twelve of the most powerful executives, stakeholders, and legal minds in New York City. Heavy velvet drapes covered the floor-to-ceiling windows, casting a dim, serious light across the room. As Clara walked in, followed closely by her father and security detail, the collective gaze of the board members shifted. Some looked away with guilty discomfort; others stared with cold calculation.
Marcus Vance swept into the room right behind them, his confidence entirely restored by the sight of his loyal supporters—Henderson, Whitaker, and Sterling—sitting rigidly in their designated seats on the left side of the table. He took his place at the head of the opposing side, resting his palms flat against the polished wood, clearing his throat to demand immediate attention.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Marcus began, his voice echoing smoothly across the high-ceilinged room. "We are gathered here today under extraordinary and regrettable circumstances. As you all know, recent personal crises involving our executive leadership have cast a dark shadow over the stability and reputation of Sterling Enterprises."
He paused, casting a theatrical glance of faux sympathy in Clara’s direction. Clara remained seated near the center of the table, her hands resting quietly in her lap, her expression entirely unreadable.
"Given the severe emotional distress, erratic judgment, and compromised position of our primary heir, Madam Clara Sterling," Marcus continued, raising his voice slightly to command the room, "I am formally calling for an emergency vote under Clause 14-B of the corporate charter. I move to temporarily suspend her executive voting rights and declare her incapacitated, effective immediately, pending a full internal restructuring of the board."
A heavy murmur rippled through the boardroom. Whitaker nodded approvingly, while several independent stakeholders exchanged nervous glances, whispering among themselves.
Marcus beamed inwardly. Everything was proceeding precisely according to schedule. Julian had served his purpose as the distraction, Clara had been isolated, and the board was primed to hand over the keys to the kingdom on a silver platter.
"Do we have a second for this motion?" Marcus asked smoothly, scanning the room.
"Second," Whitaker said loudly, raising his hand without hesitation.
Marcus turned his triumphant gaze toward Victoria Sterling, expecting to see a broken, defeated father powerless to stop the hostile takeover. Instead, Victoria was leaning back in his chair, a small, terrifyingly calm smile playing on his lips.
"Very well," Marcus declared, unable to keep the note of absolute victory out of his voice. "We will now proceed to a roll-call vote. All those in favor of suspending Miss Sterling’s executive authority, signify by saying aye."
"Aye," Whitaker called out immediately.
"Aye," Henderson echoed softly, though he refused to look up from the papers in front of him.
Marcus’s heart hammered with manic excitement. Just one more vote from the core bloc, and the victory was absolute. He turned his eyes toward Clara, waiting for the crack in her composure. But Clara simply stared back, her blue eyes as cold and deep as a frozen winter ocean.
"And my vote," Marcus added with a smug grin, raising his hand. "That makes three. The motion carries. Miss Sterling, you are officially—"
May you like
"Motion denied," a crisp, crystal-clear voice rang out from the doorway.
