Chapter 5 - The Serpent Within

The revelation hung in the air like a poisonous fog. Clara stared at her father, the adrenaline rushing through her veins completely banishing any lingering fatigue from the emotional confrontation with Julian. Marcus Vance had been a fixture at family dinners since Clara was a teenager, a smiling, avuncular figure who brought expensive gifts and always offered a reassuring pat on the shoulder. The idea that Marcus was actively plotting to dismantle Sterling Enterprises from the inside out felt surreal, yet the financial evidence her father possessed made denial impossible.
"Marcus?" Clara repeated, the name tasting like ash in her mouth. "He helped raise me, Dad. He was practically my second father after Mom passed away."
"Greed makes monsters out of men you’ve known your whole life," Victoria said grimly, standing up and pacing slowly across the marble floor. "He realized that once you gave birth, the entirety of the voting stock transfers directly to you and your child. Under the old charter, a female heir with a newborn can be declared temporarily incapacitated by a unanimous board vote, allowing a proxy chairman to take control. Marcus planned to use Julian’s financial indiscretions as leverage to force you out, and then install himself as permanent CEO."
Clara’s breath hitched. The intricate cruelty of the plot took her breath away. Julian’s affair wasn't just a betrayal of her heart; it was a carefully orchestrated weapon designed to emotionally destabilize her right before the board meeting, making her an easy target for a hostile corporate takeover.
"They planned this from the beginning," Clara realized aloud, her hands curling into tight fists against her white dress. "Julian didn't just accidentally fall for Lauren. Marcus introduced them at the charity gala six months ago. He handpicked her to distract Julian, push him into deeper financial recklessness, and keep me isolated."
"Precisely," Victoria confirmed, stopping by the window to look down at the bustling street below. "And that brings us to our next move. The board meeting is in exactly seventy-two hours. Marcus expects you to be a sobbing, broken wreck, hiding in this penthouse while he and his co-conspirators strip your inheritance away."
Clara slowly rose from the sofa, the vulnerability she had felt just an hour ago completely gone. In its place stood a woman forged in fire, driven by the absolute necessity of protecting her unborn child and her family’s legacy. She walked over to stand beside her father, her posture straight and unyielding.
"Then we let them think exactly that," Clara said, her voice eerily calm and resolute. "Let Marcus walk into that boardroom thinking he’s already won. Let him present his motion to declare me incapacitated."
Victoria turned his head, looking at his daughter with a sudden, intense surge of fierce pride. A slow, knowing smile spread across his weathered face.
"And when he finishes his grand speech?"
Clara’s eyes flashed with a dangerous, brilliant light.
"We open the envelope containing Marcus’s own signed confessions to corporate sabotage, hand-delivered by federal agents waiting outside the boardroom doors."
Victoria let out a sharp, booming laugh that echoed through the quiet penthouse, the sound filled with absolute triumph.
