Chapter 8 - The Boardroom Doors

The private executive elevator carried Clara and her father up to the forty-seventh floor in absolute silence. The digital display numbers ticked upward with agonizing slowness, each flash marking another step toward the definitive confrontation. Clara stared at her reflection in the dark, polished steel doors, watching the calm, unyielding expression on her face. The weak, crying woman in the white off-shoulder dress was gone; in her place stood the true heir to the Sterling empire, armed with facts, fury, and an unshakeable resolve.
The elevator chimed softly, and the doors slid open to reveal the opulent penthouse-level foyer of the executive boardroom. Heavy mahogany walls lined with historical portraits of past Sterling executives stretched down the hallway, leading directly to the towering double doors of the boardroom itself. Standing outside those doors was Marcus Vance.
Marcus looked immaculate in a bespoke charcoal suit, his silver-streaked hair neatly styled, a warm, avuncular smile plastered across his face. But as his eyes locked onto Clara and Victoria stepping out of the elevator, a flicker of genuine confusion crossed his features. He had expected Clara to be absent—fragile, sedated, and hiding away from the public eye. Instead, she stood before him looking terrifyingly composed, radiant, and radiating lethal confidence.
"Clara, my dear," Marcus said, stepping forward with his arms spread slightly in a mock display of paternal affection. "I was so sorry to hear about your... domestic troubles. Under the circumstances, we honestly didn't expect you to drag yourself into the office today. Your health and the baby should be your absolute priority."
Clara did not flinch, nor did she accept his outstretched hand. She stopped a few feet away, her icy blue eyes locking onto his with a gaze so sharp it practically drew blood.
"Thank you for your concern, Marcus," Clara replied smoothly, her voice carrying an underlying chill that made the older man’s smile falter for a fraction of a second. "My health is perfectly fine. And as for my priorities, protecting Sterling Enterprises has always been at the very top of my list."
Marcus recovered quickly, smoothing his lapels and casting a sidelong glance at Victoria, who stood silently beside his daughter like a coiled spring.
"Of course, of course," Marcus said smoothly, lowering his voice as he leaned in slightly. "Though, given recent events... certain questions regarding executive stability and decision-making capacity have naturally arisen among the board members. We only want what’s best for the company’s future, Clara. No one wants to see you humiliated further by that husband of yours."
Victoria stepped forward, his massive frame cutting off Marcus’s proximity to his daughter. The older man’s voice was a low, rumbling threat.
"Save your breath, Marcus. The only person being humiliated today will be the one who thought he could steal a kingdom built by better men."
Marcus’s eyes hardened, the grandfatherly facade cracking to reveal the ruthless corporate shark beneath. He straightened his posture, his chin lifting defiantly.
"We’ll see about that, Victoria. The votes are already locked in. Democracy dictates the future of this company, not family sentimentality."
With a flick of his wrist, Marcus signaled his assistant to push open the heavy mahogany boardroom doors. The low murmur of conversation inside the massive room instantly died away as all eyes turned toward the entrance.
