Chapter 7 - The Grand Lobby

Monday morning arrived with a biting autumn chill that swept down the concrete canyons of Manhattan, rattling the glass facades of the towering Sterling Enterprises headquarters. Inside the grand, marble-pillared lobby, the atmosphere was thick with tension and whispered speculation. Journalists and financial reporters, tipped off by anonymous leaks regarding an imminent leadership struggle, crowded behind the security ropes, thrusting cameras and microphones forward as high-ranking executives swiped their electronic badges and hurried through the turnstiles.
Clara stepped out of the private subterranean elevator accompanied by her father and two imposing security guards. She wore a bespoke midnight-blue cashmere coat draped elegantly over her shoulders, paired with tailored black trousers and low-heeled designer boots. Her blonde hair was pulled back into a severe, flawless chignon, and her expression was an impassive mask of icy serenity. No trace of the weeping, distressed pregnant woman from a few days ago remained. She moved with the quiet, devastating grace of a queen preparing to reclaim her throne.
As soon as she entered the lobby, a sea of camera flashes erupted, blindingly bright in the dim, polished space. Shouts pierced the air from every direction.
"Miss Sterling! Is it true you are stepping down from the board due to emotional trauma?"
"Can you comment on your husband’s embezzlement allegations?"
"Is Marcus Vance taking over control of the company today?"
Clara did not slow her pace, nor did she acknowledge a single reporter. She kept her eyes fixed straight ahead on the private executive elevator doors, her hand resting calmly over her rounded belly. Victoria walked step-for-step beside her, radiating an aura of lethal authority that kept the press at a respectful distance.
Just as they reached the elevator bank, a familiar voice cut through the noise, dripping with oily desperation.
"Clara! Please, you have to listen to me!"
Clara paused, turning her head slightly. Standing behind the barricades, held back by two security guards, was Julian. He looked entirely different from the smug, well-dressed man who had stood in their penthouse. His white shirt was wrinkled and stained at the collar, his hair unwashed, and dark, exhausted circles bruised the skin beneath his frantic eyes. He looked desperate, pathetic, and completely shattered.
"Clara, please," Julian cried out, ignoring the flashing cameras recording his humiliation. "It was a mistake! Lauren meant nothing to me! Marcus tricked me, he promised me a board seat and financial freedom! Please, talk to your father, drop the charges, don't do this to us!"
The lobby fell into an absolute, stunned silence. The reporters stopped shouting, their cameras pivoting instantly to capture the pathetic spectacle of the disgraced husband publicly begging his betrayed wife.
Clara turned slowly to face him. She did not look angry, nor did she look sad. She simply looked at him the way one might look at a stray insect crawling across a clean floor.
"You called me emotional, Julian," Clara said, her voice carrying clearly across the cavernous lobby without raising her pitch. "You thought I was weak. You forgot that the Sterling name isn't just a title. It's a bloodline of survivors."
Julian reached desperately across the rope barrier, his voice breaking. "Clara, I’m the father of your child—"
Before he could finish, the private elevator dinged softly, the polished steel doors sliding open to reveal a clear, unobstructed path upward.

Victoria placed a firm hand on Clara’s back, guiding her forward. "Come along, my dear. The board is waiting."
