Chapter 4 - The Empty Nest

The heavy oak doors of the penthouse clicked shut with a finality that echoed through the vast living room like a gunshot. The silence that followed was heavy, almost suffocating, broken only by the faint, rhythmic hum of the city traffic drifting up from the streets far below. Clara stood near the center of the expansive space, the tension slowly draining from her shoulders as she released a long, shaky breath she felt she had been holding for months. The white off-shoulder dress, which had felt like armor moments before, now felt light and liberating against her skin.
Victoria walked over to his daughter, his stern expression softening into a look of profound paternal concern. He gently placed a hand on her shoulder, guiding her toward the plush cream-colored sofa overlooking the Manhattan skyline.
"Sit down, sweetheart. You’ve been through a tremendous shock, and you need to take care of yourself and my future grandchild."
Clara complied, sinking gratefully into the soft cushions. She felt physically exhausted, yet mentally sharper than she had ever been in her life. The fog of marital delusion had completely burned away, leaving behind a stark, unyielding landscape of truth.
"I’m fine, Dad," she said quietly, resting her hands over her belly. "Honestly... I feel like a massive weight has been lifted off my chest. I didn't realize how much energy I was wasting trying to make a broken marriage work."
Victoria sat down on the armchair opposite her, his sharp eyes studying her closely.
"You were loyal, Clara. That’s your greatest strength, but Julian mistook it for weakness. He thought he could manipulate you, hide his mistress in plain sight, and inherit a share of the empire he did nothing to build. He drastically underestimated you."
"He underestimated you, too," Clara pointed out with a faint, tired smile. "How long did you know about the embezzlement?"
"Since the moment he tried to route funds from the European subsidiary through a shell company registered in the Bahamas," Victoria replied smoothly, a cold smirk touching his lips. "I let him dig his own grave. I wanted him to feel secure, to show his true colors so thoroughly that when the axe fell, he wouldn't even have a leg to stand on in court. I wanted to protect you, but I also wanted to teach him a permanent lesson about crossing the Sterling family."
Clara looked out the window at the glittering skyline. The sun was beginning to set, painting the clouds in shades of bruised purple and brilliant orange. Her mind raced with the logistical reality of her new life. She was a mother-to-be, fabulously wealthy, and completely independent, yet she knew the corporate sharks circling her father’s empire would smell blood in the water the moment news of the divorce broke. Julian was merely a symptom of a much larger rot within the company’s upper management—a rot that had allowed men like him to thrive.
"Julian couldn't have pulled off those shell companies alone," Clara said, her tone hardening as her analytical mind kicked into gear. "The Bahamian account requires dual authorization from the chief financial officer. Who signed off on it, Dad?"
Victoria’s expression darkened instantly. The pride in his eyes gave way to a deep, calculating shadow. He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, his fingers interlocked tightly.
"Marcus Vance," Victoria said, his voice dropping an octave. "Your uncle’s old protégé. He’s been quietly consolidating power on the board while I’ve been focusing on your health and the upcoming merger."
Clara’s heart skipped a beat as the pieces clicked together with terrifying clarity. Julian wasn't the mastermind; he was just a pawn in a much larger corporate coup orchestrated from within the highest ranks of her own family’s company.
"If Marcus is backing Julian," Clara whispered, horror dawning on her, "then the entire board vote next week..."
Victoria’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek.
