Chapter 12 - The Fallout

The departure of Marcus Vance in federal handcuffs left the boardroom in a state of stunned, collective shock. The remaining executives sat frozen in their leather chairs, staring at the empty seat at the head of the table as if a ghost had just vanished from it. The illusion of safety had been shattered, and every person in the room realized just how close they had come to participating in a criminal conspiracy disguised as a corporate restructure.
Victoria Sterling broke the heavy silence, walking slowly toward the head of the table and taking the vacant chair that Marcus had occupied just moments before. He placed both hands flat on the mahogany surface, his sharp eyes sweeping across the trembling faces of the board members.
"It appears," Victoria began, his voice cutting through the quiet like a blade, "that the house cleaning is finally complete. For too long, complacency and personal ambition have blinded some of you to the fundamental loyalty this company demands."
Whitaker swallowed hard, clearing his throat nervously before raising a hesitant hand. "Mr. Sterling... regarding the emergency motion... obviously, in light of these shocking developments, we wish to rescind our support entirely. Miss Sterling’s leadership and integrity have never been stronger."
Several other executives quickly chimed in, offering eager nods and sycophantic agreements, desperate to distance themselves from Marcus’s fallout before the federal investigators expanded their inquiries.
Clara remained standing beside her father, watching the pathetic display with cold, analytical detachment. She had spent years watching these very men bow and scrape to her father while secretly plotting behind his back. The corporate world was a shark tank, and she had just proved she was the apex predator.
"Your support isn't required for me to lead, Whitaker," Clara said, her voice smooth and chillingly authoritative. "Your continued employment, however, is entirely dependent on your absolute, unswerving loyalty moving forward. Effective immediately, every division head will undergo a forensic financial audit conducted by an independent federal agency. If anyone here has even a shadow of a doubt about their own books, I suggest you clean them out by the end of the day."
A wave of palpable terror washed over the board members. No one dared to utter a single word of dissent.
"Meeting adjourned," Victoria announced, slamming his hand gently against the table.
As the executives hastily gathered their portfolios and scrambled out of the boardroom like frightened mice, Clara finally allowed herself to take a long, deep breath. The adrenaline rush that had sustained her through the confrontation was beginning to fade, replaced by a dull, throbbing ache in her lower back and the sheer physical exhaustion of a woman seven months pregnant who had just fought a corporate war.
Victoria noticed her wince, his stern expression instantly softening into deep paternal concern. He stood up, wrapping a steadying arm around her waist.
"You did it, sweetheart," he murmured softly, guiding her toward the private elevator. "You saved the empire. Now let’s get you home. You need to rest."
"I’m okay, Dad," Clara whispered, leaning against his shoulder as the elevator doors slid shut behind them. "Just... tired."
"We’re almost home," Victoria promised.

Neither of them knew that waiting for them in the subterranean parking garage below was a desperate, unhinged ghost from Clara’s past, unwilling to accept his total ruin.
