Chapter 6 - The Calm Before the Storm

The next forty-eight hours passed in a blur of calculated silence and furious behind-the-scenes maneuvering. Clara remained inside the penthouse, deliberately leaking rumors through trusted staff that she was heavily sedated, deeply depressed, and utterly inconsolable over Julian’s betrayal. The strategy was designed to feed Marcus Vance’s arrogance, encouraging him to finalize his hostile takeover plans without exercising any caution. Down on Wall Street, whispers spread like wildfire that the Sterling heiress was emotionally compromised, and that the upcoming board meeting would result in a massive restructuring of the company's leadership.
Inside the quiet sanctuary of her private study, Clara sat behind an antique mahogany desk, reviewing financial ledgers and encrypted emails forwarded directly from her father’s private cyber-security team. Every document pointed directly to Marcus Vance’s systematic embezzlement, insider trading, and secret meetings with rival corporate conglomerates looking to carve up Sterling Enterprises. The betrayal cut deep, but Clara had locked away her grief behind a wall of cold, unyielding pragmatism. Her focus was entirely singular: protecting her child’s future.
A soft knock interrupted her concentration, and Victoria entered the room, holding a secure tablet computer in his hand. He looked tired, the deep lines around his eyes betraying the immense strain of the past few days, yet his posture remained as rigid and formidable as ever.
"How are you holding up, Clara?" Victoria asked softly, setting the tablet down on the desk and peering closely at his daughter’s face. "The stress of all this... I need to know you and the baby are alright."
Clara looked up, offering him a reassuring, tired smile. "I’m fine, Dad. The doctor checked in an hour ago; everything is stable. The baby is strong. Honestly, the anger is keeping me going. I refuse to let men like Marcus and Julian tear down what you and Grandfather built."
Victoria nodded, a look of profound respect crossing his features. "Good. Because Marcus just made his final move. He’s officially filed the emergency motion to invoke the incapacity clause for Monday’s board meeting. He thinks he’s cornered us."
"Let him think he has," Clara replied, her fingers tapping rhythmically against the edge of the mahogany desk. "Does he have the votes secured?"
"He thinks he has three of the five board members in his pocket," Victoria said, leaning against the edge of the desk. "Henderson, Whitaker, and Sterling himself—or so he believes. He doesn't know that I quietly bought out Henderson’s private shares yesterday morning through an offshore holding company. When Marcus calls for the vote, Henderson’s proxy belongs to us."
Clara felt a grim sense of satisfaction wash over her. Marcus Vance was walking blindly into a trap of his own making, completely unaware that the financial net had already been pulled tight around him.
"What about Julian?" Clara asked, her voice dropping slightly. "Has he tried to reach out?"
Victoria’s expression hardened. "He called my office twice begging for financial assistance. His bank accounts are completely locked, his credit cards are bouncing, and Miss Kensington apparently packed her bags and left him the moment she realized his funds were frozen. He’s desperate."
Clara felt no pity, only a cold detachment. Julian had made his bed; now he had to lie in it.

"Good," Clara said quietly, standing up and smoothing down the fabric of her tailored charcoal maternity dress. "Let him watch the empire he tried to sell out crush him into dust."
