Chapter 3 - The Frozen Asset

The stark white pages of the manila folder seemed to mock Julian under the harsh penthouse lights. He stared down at the crisp black ink of the legal heading, his mind struggling to process the sheer speed at which his secure, comfortable existence had evaporated. For three years, Julian had ridden the coattails of the Sterling name, leveraging Clara’s quiet influence to secure lucrative promotions and board seats within her father’s sprawling conglomerate. He had believed himself untouchable, a rising star of Manhattan real estate. Now, looking at the bold letters spelling out his immediate termination and financial freeze, the terrifying reality of his total dependence slammed into him.
"You can't do this," Julian stammered, his voice cracking as he took a desperate step forward. "We have a prenuptial agreement! I am a partner at Sterling Realty! You can't just strip me of my position without cause!"
Victoria chuckled, a dry, humorless sound that lacked any warmth. He turned his body slightly, fixing his gaze on the panicked man with undisguised contempt.
"Cause? Julian, my legal team has spent the last forty-eight hours compiling every single financial discrepancy, shell company, and illicit transaction you’ve conducted using Sterling funds to finance Miss Kensington’s lavish lifestyle. Embezzlement, corporate espionage, and breach of fiduciary duty. Shall I call the district attorney right now, or would you prefer to sign the quiet resignation?"
Lauren gasped, stepping away from Julian as if his touch suddenly burned her. Her golden dress rustled sharply against her legs as she stared at him with sudden calculation.
"Wait," Lauren said quickly, her voice losing its previous sultry confidence and turning shrill. "What do you mean, financial discrepancy? Julian told me his firm funded all this. He said he was the primary earner!"
Julian whipped his head around, his eyes widening in betrayal.
"Lauren, shut up! Don't listen to her, Mr. Sterling, she’s just trying to save herself—"
"Quiet!" Victoria barked, raising a single finger. The sheer authority in his tone silenced the room instantly. He looked at Lauren with cold amusement. "Miss Kensington, my investigators have frozen every credit card, bank account, and luxury lease tied to your name as of twenty minutes ago. The apartment in Tribeca you moved into last month? Eviction notice was filed simultaneously. You are legally required to vacate the premises by midnight."
Lauren’s face paled beneath her heavy makeup. She looked from Victoria to Clara, her carefully curated composure completely shattering. Tears of genuine panic welled in her eyes as she realized her golden ticket had turned into lead.
"You can't do this! This is insane! Clara, tell him to stop this!"
Clara looked down at the woman who had smugly stolen her husband just moments ago. There was no triumph in Clara’s chest, only a hollow, echoing void that was rapidly filling with cold clarity. She walked slowly toward the coffee table, picking up her crystal teacup and taking a calm sip before setting it back down.
"When you walked through that door, Lauren, you called me naive," Clara said softly, her voice carrying clearly across the quiet room. "You thought I would cry, scream, and beg him to stay. You forgot one very important detail."
Lauren blinked, her lower lip trembling.
"What... what detail?"
Clara placed a gentle hand back over her swollen belly, looking straight into Lauren’s panicked eyes.
"This child isn't just Julian’s heir. This child is the sole continuation of the Sterling bloodline. And you just declared war on the wrong family."
Victoria nodded, stepping aside as the two bodyguards moved in with mechanical precision, flanking Julian and Lauren on either side.
"Pack your bags. You have ten minutes before the locks are changed permanently."
May you like
Julian stood frozen, his eyes darting to the door, realizing he had lost everything he had ever stolen.
