Chapter 2 - The Sterling Legacy

The mention of her father's promise hung heavily in the air, a phantom weight that instantly shifted the power dynamic of the entire room. Julian’s face drained of color, the defiant panic in his eyes morphing into genuine, unadulterated terror. He knew the Sterling name; everyone in New York City's high-stakes corporate world knew it. Victoria Sterling did not make idle threats, and he certainly did not break promises, especially when it concerned his only daughter and heir to the Sterling Enterprises fortune.

Lauren’s smug smile faltered for a fraction of a second, her grip on Julian’s arm tightening instinctively as she sized up the older man standing before them. Victoria walked with a slow, deliberate cadence, his polished oxfords clicking rhythmically against the pristine marble floor. He stopped directly in front of Clara, gently lifting a hand to cup her pale cheek with unexpected tenderness, a stark contrast to the glacial glare he directed at Julian.

"You called me, sweetheart," Victoria murmured softly, his eyes scanning Clara’s tear-stained face and the rounded contour of her belly. "And the Sterling family never lets an outsider trample on our own."

Julian swallowed hard, taking half a step backward, pulling Lauren slightly with him.

"Mr. Sterling, sir. There’s been a misunderstanding. This isn't what it looks like. Clara is just emotional—hormonal—and she’s exaggerating the situation."

Victoria did not even glance at Julian as he spoke. Instead, he withdrew a pristine white handkerchief from his breast pocket and gently wiped a stray tear from his daughter’s cheek. Only when he had finished did he slowly turn his head, fixing his cold, predatory eyes upon the younger man. The silence that followed was absolute, broken only by the hum of the centralized air conditioning.

"Misunderstanding?" Victoria’s voice was dangerously calm, carrying the weight of a man accustomed to crushing corporate rivals with a single signature. "My daughter is seven months pregnant with the sole heir to my legacy, standing in her own home, while you parade your expensive mistress in broad daylight. Do I look like a fool to you, Julian?"

Julian opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out. His throat felt as though it had closed up completely. He glanced sideways at Lauren, silently begging her to use her supposed charm to salvage the rapidly deteriorating situation. But Lauren had lost her composure, her eyes darting nervously toward the towering bodyguards blocking the exit.

Clara watched the scene unfold with a detached numbness. The man who had once promised her the stars was now reduced to a trembling coward, unable to meet her gaze. She stepped out from behind her father’s protective shadow, squaring her shoulders as the pain in her heart crystallized into pure, cold strategy. She had spent years playing the dutiful, quiet wife, but that woman had died the moment Julian brought Lauren across their threshold.

"You don't need to explain anything to him, Dad," Clara said, her voice steady and chillingly devoid of emotion. "He’s already made his choice."

Victoria nodded approvingly, a faint, proud smile touching the corners of his mouth. He signaled with a flick of his wrist, and the lead bodyguard immediately stepped forward, pulling a thick manila folder from inside his jacket and holding it out.

"Good," Victoria said, his eyes locking back onto Julian as the bodyguard flipped the folder open to reveal a stack of legal documents. "Because the divorce papers are already signed, and your corporate exile starts right now."

Julian stared at the documents in absolute horror, realizing too late that his entire life had just unraveled.
