Chapter 9 - The Orphan's Witness

The glowing tactical reader screen cast a harsh green hue across Marcus's face as he scrolled past endless columns of encrypted financial data. The sound of water dripping from the ceiling into the flooded sub-basement hatch filled the tense silence of the ballroom.

"Here it is," Marcus whispered, his voice tightening. "The relocation records for District Four. The children weren't transferred to foster homes across the state, Arthur. Their identities were wiped, and their trust funds were liquidated to finance the Vanguard real estate empire."

A prominent tech investor in the front row dropped his designer coat, his face flushing with rage. "My firm donated ten million dollars to that specific relocation fund! You told us every child was safely placed in a loving home!"

"They were cheaper to erase than they were to house," Julian spat from the floor, his voice dripping with venom as he wiped muddy water from his chin. He glared up at his brother Richard with pure hatred. "And you, you self-righteous fool. You found out about the ledger three years ago, so we gave you a cruise on your own yacht with a rigged bilge valve. How did you even survive the freezing water?"

Richard didn't flinch. He crouched down until he was eye-level with his treacherous brother, the faint smell of ozone and damp earth clinging to his ruined clothes. "I didn't swim, Julian. I crawled through the discharge pipes into the sub-basement. I spent thirty-six months living in the dark, watching you throw elite galas on top of a mass grave of stolen childhoods."

Little Lily let go of Eleanor's hand. She took two deliberate steps forward, her small white dress stained at the knees with chemical residue, holding up the damp white cloth. She walked right past Julian without a single glance and stopped in front of Richard.

"I finished cleaning the floor, Mr. Richard," Lily said softly, her voice carrying an eerie, unnatural clarity that silenced the entire room. "Just like you told me to do in the tunnel."

Richard gently placed his calloused hand on top of the little girl's light brown hair. "You did a brave job, Lily. The truth is finally out on the surface where everyone can see it."

Arthur scrambled backward on the wet marble, his hands clawing desperately at the heavy mahogany doors behind him. "You don't understand! We had to liquidate those funds to keep the foundation afloat during the market crash! It was for the greater good of the elite!"

"The only thing you kept afloat was your own greed," Marcus declared, stepping forward with his federal cuffs already unlatched. He grabbed Arthur by the collar of his expensive, silver-trimmed suit and slammed him hard against the wood. "Arthur Pendelton, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, identity theft, and corporate manslaughter."

May you like

Arthur didn't resist. He stared blankly at the open sub-basement hatch, where a strange, rhythmic tapping sound had begun to echo from the dark void below once again.
