Chapter 8 - The Vault of Shadows

The blue electric surge died as quickly as it had ignited, leaving the ballroom plunged into an eerie, suffocating half-light. The emergency generator kicked on with a harsh, whining hum, casting long, jaundiced shadows across the ruined marble floor. Julian collapsed onto his knees near the edge of the open hatch, coughing violently and clutching his smoking lapel, completely stripped of his aristocratic arrogance.

Richard stood directly above him, his face illuminated by the flickering emergency lights. He didn't look at his brother; instead, his gaze swept over the remaining guests, who were cowering near the barricaded exit doors, clutching their ruined formal wear.

"You wanted to know where the endowment funds went," Richard said, his voice echoing in the damp air. He reached into the pocket of his mud-stained tuxedo and pulled out a heavy, waterproof data drive, holding it up for everyone to see. "You thought they were in offshore accounts in the Caymans. But Arthur and Julian are far more paranoid than that."

Arthur, pressing his back against the locked mahogany doors, shook his head frantically. "He's lying! That drive is a forgery! It's a trap designed to seize control of the board!"

"Is it, Arthur?" Marcus asked, stepping forward from where he had shielded Eleanor and Lily. The detective pulled a portable tactical reader from his jacket, snapping it open with a sharp click. "Let's find out."

Marcus crossed the damaged floor, ignoring the swirling water, and took the data drive from Richard's hand. He inserted the device into the reader's slot. For a tense moment, the small screen flickered with red error code lines. Then, a bright green confirmation light flashed, accompanied by a soft chime.

"Biometric match confirmed," the reader's automated voice announced clearly across the silent room. "User: Richard Vance. Master Archive Unlocked."

A collective gasp rippled through the crowd. Eleanor looked down at little Lily, whose small fingers were still wrapped tightly around the damp white cloth she had been using to scrub the floor earlier. The child's eyes were fixed on the tactical reader screen, her breathing steady and calm.

"Read it, Marcus," Eleanor urged, her voice steady and commanding. "Read the names of every person involved in the asset stripping."

Marcus glanced down at the scrolling text, his face darkening with every line. "It's not just financial fraud. The drive contains the complete registry of the Vanguard orphanage relocation project from five years ago."

Arthur let out a choked, desperate sob, sliding down the mahogany doors until he hit the floor. "Don't open that file. If you open that file, the federal government won't just arrest us—they'll shut down every asset this foundation owns within the hour."

"That," Richard said coldly, stepping over the edge of the open hatch, "is precisely the point."
