Chapter 15 - The Midnight Floor

The absolute darkness lasted for only a fraction of a second before a single, piercing beam of light cut through the center of the ruined ballroom. It wasn't a smartphone flashlight, nor an emergency halogen lamp. It was a golden amber glow emanating directly from the open sub-basement hatch, casting long, dramatic shadows against the crumbling marble walls.
Nobody moved. The federal tactical agents froze with their weapons raised, their laser sights cutting erratic lines through the rising mist. Deputy Attorney General Sarah Vance instinctively took a step back, her hand dropping toward her own sidearm as she stared into the glowing chasm.
From the depths of the sub-basement, a slow, rhythmic sound of footsteps echoed up the stone steps. One, two, three. Heavy, steady, unhurried.
A figure emerged into the amber light, silhouette tall and imposing. It was Richard Vance. His mud-stained tuxedo was shredded, and his hands were wrapped in makeshift white bandages soaked with dark stains, but his posture was upright, his gaze fixed entirely on Sarah Vance. In his right hand, he held the master physical ledger—a thick, leather-bound volume stamped with the original Vanguard seal from nineteen-thirty-eight.
"You're late for the board meeting, Sarah," Richard said, his voice deep and resonant, echoing off the vaulted ceiling of the ruined ballroom.
Sarah’s face drained of all color, her composure finally shattering into jagged pieces. "That's... that's impossible. The secondary bulkhead collapsed. No one could survive that pressure."
"I told you," Richard replied, taking another step forward onto the ruined floor, his boots leaving dark, wet prints across the marble. "I spent three years living in the dark beneath your feet. I know every escape route, every valve, and every secret you and the board tried to bury with the orphans."
Julian and Arthur watched in absolute horror as Richard walked past them, ignoring their pathetic whimpers entirely. He stopped directly in front of Sarah Vance, holding out the heavy leather-bound ledger toward her.
"The federal marshals are outside the perimeter, Sarah," Richard said softly. "And every single financial transaction, bribe, and cover-up is currently being mirrored to every independent news agency across the country. Your containment failed."
Sarah stared at the ledger, her hands trembling slightly as she realized her career, her power, and her entire empire had just collapsed into dust. She slowly raised her hands, not to draw her weapon, but to signal her own tactical agents to stand down.
"It's over," Sarah whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the distant ventilation fans.

Richard didn't smile. He turned his head slowly, looking past the federal agents to where little Lily stood quietly by the edge of the room. The little girl was holding the damp
