Chapter 6 - The Ghost in the Tuxedo

The blinding light of the smartphone flashlights converged on the rising figure like a firing squad. The man standing at the center of the smoking steel hatch was pale, his eyes sunken and hollow, dressed in a once-luxurious tuxedo now stained with dark, dried mud. It was Julian Vance’s older brother, Richard Vance, the brilliant founder of the Vanguard Foundation who had supposedly perished in a tragic yacht explosion off the coast of Maine three years to the day.
"Richard?" Julian gasped, stumbling backward until his spine slammed hard against a towering floral centerpiece. His face drained of all color, his lips trembling as he stared at the apparition. "That's... that's impossible. We identified the dental records. We held the state funeral!"
"You identified a corpse that wasn't mine, Julian," Richard said, his voice raspy from disuse, cutting through the terrified whispers of the elite guests. He stepped fully out of the sub-basement lift, his boots clicking heavily against the scarred marble floor. In his right hand, he held a cracked smartphone, its screen illuminating his gaunt features with an eerie blue glow. "And you made sure the insurance payout cleared within forty-eight hours. Quite efficient for a grieving brother."
Arthur Pendelton shielded his eyes, backing away toward the grand exit with frantic steps. "He's hallucinating! The air down there is full of toxic mold—this is a delirious vagrant wearing custom tailoring! Security, remove him right now!"
None of the guards moved. They stood paralyzed, their eyes locked on Richard, who offered a chilling, mirthless smile.
"The mold isn't the only thing down there, Arthur," Richard replied, turning his gaze toward the trembling board member. "Beneath this glittering ballroom, in the pitch-black tunnels you built with embezzled orphan funds, sits the real ledger. Every bribe, every shell corporation, every name you erased."
Eleanor stepped forward, her sparkly gold dress catching the erratic beams of light. Her hand still rested protectively on little Lily's shoulder. "Richard, you survived. But why come out now? Why orchestrate this entire spectacle tonight?"
Richard looked down at Lily, his harsh expression softening just a fraction. "Because three years ago, they tried to bury me alive. Tonight, they tried to make this little girl clean up their sins. I couldn't let another innocent child take the fall for the Vanguard family."
Julian’s panic suddenly curdled into furious desperation. He lunged toward a service table, snatching a heavy silver candelabra. "I buried you once, brother! I can do it again!"

Before Julian could swing the heavy metal, a deafening explosion echoed from deep beneath the floorboards, tearing the sub-basement hatch completely off its hinges.
